Soldier flys are great. I know people that give them to other fellow composters to seed there own compost pile. They do not stay long unless you have some food scraps in the pile.
I tried them in my mostly yard waste pile, and they never took hold.

our "**** heap" is like 4 years old and has never had them. of course we are the laziest composters in the wide world of sports but that's another issue.
good compost: half the **** we throw in it keeps growing.

This species is noted for its ability to shoot a toxic spray in self-defense. It aims for the eyes and sports an accuracy of upwards to 30-40 cm (~12-15 inches). The spray, if it makes contact with the eyes, causes intense burning and pain. It’s also intended solely for self defense (the species consumes tree and bush leaves, not animals).
