What to do with blown Subie?
I have a blown up Subie Forester XT. It has a downpipe and exhaust and a wideband. The motor is toast.
The question is: Should I spend $6000 and build the motor for 350awhp? Or say fuck you Forester, sell it for $6000, and do something else with my money. Here's the build list: $1000 turbo $4000 motor $500 injectors $500 ???? I already have my broken miata, a working stockish miata, and a lexus IS-F. All cars are fully paid for. If I sell the forester I will probably get some other fast/fun AWD/4wd vehicle I can carry stuff around in. No clue what that would be. |
Put in another stock 2.5t engine, re-tune to not fael, profit?

sell it to me lolz
|
uhg thats the cheapest you can find a motor? What about just a bottom end.
My GF has a 95k mile 07 Legacy GT. I hope I never have to replace the motor now! |
Take that engine to a machine shop.
|
I have a spare EJ255 long block sittin here waiting for you baby
:fael: |
Subie motors are expensive. Did your tune just suck and you blew it up? How much WHP were you pushing? How many miles on it? Stock block should safely do 300whp with no issues. Out of all my buddies with subarus, none have blown up with proper tunes even with tons of abuse and over 100k miles.

We're replacing my brother's toasted exhaust valve on his LGT at the moment, same valve & cylinder that mine went a year or so ago. Full suck sodium valves.
And there are places around that have cheaper long blocks than what you posted. |
Send me the blown up motor with heads so I can build a header for my wrx please, and thank you!
|
What was failure mode?
You guys are making me worried about my FXT. And Fae, didn't you make fun of 18psi and his subaru tuning? I hope it wasn't a tune issue. |
The motor died because it was burning oil. Like 1Q a gas tank. I knew this when I bought it. But. Of course. I forgot to check the damn oil. I installed some spiffy new coilvers and was doing 4 wheel drifts. All was awesome. Then on one hard turn I started to hear TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP.
The end. Turbo then blew. I drained the oil and it was all golden and coppery. I was very sad. So I never really wanted to do a big build with this car. You really think I should just get a new bottom end? |

I really just want to see how fast you can go bankrupt modding cars. |
I'll trade you my miata for your blown forester. Then you can have 3 miatas.

Vlad, Tim, how much do you think I can find a bottom end for? |
Factory shortblock should retail for ~$1800-1900 from your local subaru dealer. (1725 rimjobbbbber)
Your aftermarket engine rebuilders should be less than that but we didn't find anyone with any in-stock (~3 weeks turnaround), but my bro didn't end up needing a shortblock. EDIT AGAIN: but if you fucked up your cam towers/caps or got bad stuff inside your VVT gizmo, you may need more than a shortblock. |
1. Spend $6k on Cosworth built engine
2. Install 3. Never worry about reliability of engine again. 4. ???? 5. Profit |

1. Think of how much driving enjoyment you have received from your teal Miata.
2. Think of how much driving enjoyment you have received from your IS-F. 3. Note the level of modifications between the two. 4. Set up the Forester accordingly. |
well played.
|
1. Sell Forester
2. Fix teal miata 3. Dyno tune teal miata 4. ??? 5. Profit |

VVT solenoids aren't too expensive. I had to replace one on my GF's car. She still has both of the filters in the banjo bolts. In the spring I want to replace the one feeding her turbo and check shaft play on the stock turbo. Cam caps on the other hand... no bueno. If you just do a shortblock BE SURE to replace both of the banjo bolts that have filters in them. |

Miss mine too.

Hahahaha luckily 18psi isn't over there... wrxforums is a really good forum for the 2008 and up Wrx/STi's ... Lots of specific information pertaining to those years. They recently changed the name to something more generic to open it up to the newer generations to come in the future. Personally I think it was a bad move because it's TOO generic.... but oh well too late now |
cool, I need an ambient temp sensor. Apparently the PO removed it for some odd reason. so now I dont get to see how cold it is outsie.

What year is yours? My brother just picked up a 2010 silver hatch and he's loving it! I always said if I got another it would be a hatch next time. Love how much room there is back there! **Edit** - Maybe with all the Subaru interest we should have an Official Subaru Chat thread? hahaha we completely derailed this one |

Your shit was abused. |
interesting. It looks like it had those dual read horns at one point, i see the old mounting bracket for them, but I didnt notice any evidence of a FMIC. The PO didnt seem to know much when I asked, only that he did the bad tint job on the taillights. But it could have been done before him, he just bought it at a local dealer last year.
But what you say, I could buy. that's the trouble with buying these things, hard to get one unmodded. And with buying used in general, never know what youre really getting. For example, I've kept my orginial door/shelf speakers and radio in my altima for the day I finally sold it. When I opened the box I've kept them in, I only found 3 speakers. Suffice to say, the car now only has 3 speakers installed. |

Uh ohhhh.. The front bumper comes off really easily maybe rip that off and check for other obvious signs from a FMIC. Check the turbo bolts and see if it was swapped. I wouldn't be worried unless it had a turbo swap. FMIC is pretty harmless.
