Default What have you heard about Atlanta?

Just curious what's in the news. About a year ago, we had no gas in GA. I am not exaggerating, we literally had no fuel for about 2 weeks or so. Didn't really make news.

Now, Atlanta is the new New Orleans. In the past 24 hours, we have had up to 15" of rain. Up to 20" of rain since Friday. Everything is flooded. A neighbor up the street went to bed with his car in his driveway (his driveway goes uphill towards the garage, street level is downhill from the garage). When he woke up, his car was in the street; it just washed down. My parents have 3" of rain in their sunken living room. My inlaws have 6" of Rain in their ranch house.

More regular people are coming home today to find their houses flooded. There are stories on the news of people coming home and finding their pets had drowned due to being trapped.

Accidents everywhere. Smashed cars abandoned on the road side. Others stuck in high water. Some of the accidents were fatal.

At least one lady drowned trying to cross a washed out bridge after her car stalled out.

We have had a few mudslides.

Interstates are shut down here and there. They look like boatramps, pavement just going into lakes. Many surface streets are closed.

People have had to be rescued off their rooftops in jon boats all over City of Atlanta and the Atlanta metro area.

The local police are towing jon boats behind their cruisers where I am and have asked people to not drive in non emergency situations.

Schools are closed tomorrow.

The creek that cuts through my neighborhood is at its banks. It runs behind my house, but I don't think it will threaten me due to the topography. If it continues to rise tonight, it will not be good for a couple of my neighbors.

Just curious if it's making news.

This is the first I have heard of this, I don't pay close attention to the news though.
This is the only story I found locally: ksl.com - Toddler among 6 killed as storms pound Southeast

That really sucks, I wonder why it isn't getting very much coverage?

You guys got it worse than we did. Thursday and Friday we had about 6''-8'' of rain, plus another 3'' or scattered between Saturday and today. My house had a lake around it all weekend like it does any time we get more than a few inches of rain. I heard you guys got about 16'' in 24 hours just north of ATL. Crazy stuff. I like rain, as long as it doesn't wash my house away. I can stand the creek being up and the roads being flooded. Bad weather is one of my favorite things.

Wonder if a lowered Miata would make it through that "puddle" ^ I doubt it... more proof that ATL people can't drive, or drive like crazy people.

Wow, that's a mess all right. I have heard about this, but not to that level of severity.

But forgive me for saying that this is not the "new New Orleans".

Get back to me when your little rainstorm has killed nearly 1500 people.

nope, I'm a desk-rat now. Its great. I get to work on my car when I want, clean my house, just chill. It takes a catastrophic event like Katrina or Ike to get me out of the office.

Its amazing how much of this has to do with infrastructure.

It is not unheard of to have 20in of rain from a tropical system moving through Florida, but somehow it never floods here like you see in those older southern cities.

Good luck to everyone in Atlanta.

I just saw a news flash about the flooding on the 10oclock. Lasted about 15seconds before moving on. The consensus I guess is that no one cares about ATL.

Could it be that Florida is relatively flat and Georgia is pretty hilly? Water doesn't like to go away when its sitting in a valley between 2 big granite or limestone hills. Plus Georgia has a lot of clay soil.
