man oh man did this place get outta hand!.......Nothing wrong with driving around cones...to me driving a car hard is like having sex, I perfer doing it the ways I like it with the people I want.but either way if im having sex im having fun an happy to be doing it :). Regardless if its autocross or HPDE...or god forbid i would actually step foot on a dragstrip...as long as im driving my car Im having fun, Shit give me a go kart at Speedzone for a while and I have a blast.... its waiting so long to do it that gets me.
But I still have my funniest times in the canyons....but thats because i dont have the cash for a dedicated track car that is scary to drive. right now I know my cars pretty well and I have to learn some more. But that distance is not big anymore....oh well lets just have fun driving, and not waitng to drive :) |

VWs alright, im thinking of starting my own autox club or at least stuff for track days. Theres a track in MI/IN we can get for 1500-2000 a day with workers and ambulance. I guess the guys who own it are red neck as hell and just want to have a good time.
when i lived in holland, mi, i would goto gingerman tu-th. from mid may to early-mid sept they would have allows people to drive the track for $60 from 5pm til dusk. depending on the amount of people, usually no more than 20-30 on these nights, you would get about 3-5 20 minute sessions. your car had to pass tech, you needed a rollbar for a miata, and had to have a helmet, pants, etc. i don't know if they still do it, but i spent a LOT of money there in two years. worth every penny. |

wow, i bet your national autocross champ friends really appreciate you saying shit like that.
i like autox, i'd love to do a track day. It sounds like somebody got their ass kicked by their friends at the doggie-paddling competition. yep, they actually do. good friends can express opinions without taking offense. yep, i doggie paddle well-enough but my freestyle is far more fun and faster. |

think that's the crux of the problem here with allot of people.
I absolutely love to autocross, but the people you autocross with and the quality of the people putting on the event can make a big difference between enjoying yourself and wanting to kick some ass at the end of the day......... |

i went to chicago scca events in 2000-2002 and have never been back. the organizers were assholes unless you were in the 'inner circle' and the most runs i ever got was 4. the audi chicago club events usually get you 10+ runs, although they have a stupid rule where the course finishes are retarded. the people are very friendly though.
in central illinois things seem to be almost the polar opposite of chicago scca. registration usually closes around 10ish ($20 for club members, $25 for students, $30 for everyone else) and we usually get 5 or 6 runs in. things are more relaxed, although sometimes things move frustratingly slow. usually done around 5 or 6pm. still have to be outside in the sun for 8-10 hours for about 5 minutes of track time though. i've done a couple track days before, but the idea of tracking my daily driver has me squeamish about offs and mechanical failures. at least with autox events i have friends who can tow my car home for me in exchange for beer. |
Marty, did you see the focus roll? It was at rantoul
|
no, that happened on one of the saturdays for which i was at home, hungover. i heard all about it sunday though :p
|
Oh yeah a friend of mine did that, got a new mustang from the insurance co.

Yea, autocrossers that don't know any better usually chant that mantra.
There is a major fallacy with that statement, because usually good road racers have absolutely no interest in autocross, find the idea boring, and after having tasted sweeter fruits higher up on the vine have little enthusiasm to become successful at autocross. "tasted sweeter fruits" :cjerk: i wish i could spend more time at tracks, but they are pricy, no one said road courses suck...people are saying auto-x sux, sorry if you have had bad experiences, maybe little orange cones just scare you...auto-x is every amateurs dream, cheap, fun, and harmelss, great way to learn your car and how much you realy dont know about driving it...i have fun every time i go, yeah you can wait long times if the organizers are retarded, but dont go with that club, one club here has an annual 24 hr. auto-x...as many runs in a 24 hr. period as you could possibly want...but thats besides the point, auto-x is perfect for the low budget enthusiast, sometimes even creeps i admitt, but just ignore them...they will go away without cutting off your thigh and making a hat out of it :gay:

Sweeet! You totally convinced me the only way to improve my skills is to hang out in a parking lot and argue about car classing with hypersensitive gomers.
|
ohhh ice burrrrn

that said Im going to give autox a shot because Im too far from the closest track, and its my daily I'm not saying autocross isn't worth doing, and isn't a great place to start. It's just really hard to get excited about it once you start doing big track stuff, or start wheel to wheel racing. |

again, avoid all gomers and just have fun...go with different club, i wish you were in this region, we have some great events...lots of seat time...except for speedfed nationals, that was very unorganized due to complications we wnt talk about...anyone that was there will know what i mean...damn insurance co. |
I did actaully autocross quite a bit back in the day, but in this area there is really only one club, and track time is so damned cheap that it makes 0 to no sense to me to be spending time and money autocrossing.
The local club isn't entirely full of dickweeds, I just don't care about the hard core classing and elitest attitude some autocrossers who have never really done any big track driving take. |
What are you talking about Ben? The auto-xers here are teh most awesomn3ss =/ Did you get your melting issue figured out yet?
|
LOL. I said not entirely full of dickweeds, there are several very cool people. I hate how pointlessly rigid the structure of everything is, you've gotta admit there's quite a few folks that take it way too serious.
When was the last time the autocrossers threw a bbq just to hang out? Yea, I'm taking corrective measures to cure the melting, I'm also taking the time to redo some stuff. |
I don't think there was any time in the last ... 5 years or so where they had a hang-out shindig.
