World Cup 2010 thread

We got any soccer fans out there? I took off work tomorrow so I can watch the games. Next week during work I'll just watch them thru the internet instead of in HD at home. I'm only going to miss 2 days of action since I'll be in Montreal for the F1 race. Looks like the USA vs England game is going to be HUGE. Kinda upset that I'll be missing that one.

tellum 06-10-2010 02:40 PM

Força Portugal!

buffon01 06-10-2010 03:07 PM

Is football, not soccer. FUCK MEXICO, BRASIL, and ARGENTINA!!!

Aguante Honduras! Go USA!

Added the verizon international data plan with unlimited usage for a whole $2.33 per day. I'll tether the blackberry to the laptop and watch the FOOTBALL matches while at the track. Life is good.

More Holland than the other two. England and Spain are known for always having sick squats and failing on the later rounds.

Not.A.Chance.

And I'm English!

Seriously though, there are far FAR better teams than us out there, our best centre half by a county mile has been crocked by a centre foward with a worse goal to game ration than some goalkeepers.

Brazil, Spain or Italy if they hit top gear for me. Spain will wither 'do' a France 2002 aka bottle it or they'll do a France 2000 and collect the only other trophy they can win.

Germany are dark horses too, they always come good come finals.

Anyways theyre on my teams group so Im doing brujeria and all against them :D

lol! I take it you're going for Honduras. :giggle:

I hope you make it to the next round but it's going to be hard for you guys to beat Chile.

And, oh btw, Spain has the best team this time around. England and Argentina have the best individual players by far.

Hey Rich, I have to disagree with you. This time around you have great players and a great coach. You'll go very far.

Italy won't go past the quarterfinals (if they even reach it!). They're way too old and there's a lot of turmoil.

Our squad is older!

Have to agree though the coach is brilliant, it's the players that are lacking. It's more the depth of the squad that's worrying, and we only have Barry as a holding player and he's only just back from injury.

I dunno, reckon we'll make the quarters and get knocked out on pens, true English style :)

Only from the greatest sports site on the internet:

http://myp2p.eu/competition.php?comp...e=worldcup2010

I'm sure all the games will be on there. You may have to download some programs to watch it. (mostly Sopcast). All the programs you would need to watch are located in the tab on top of that page labeled "software". I watch just about every kind of sport on there from the Polish League Football games to PPV boxing. Also great for American Football if you're a fan of a team that's not in you're area.

Or you can also try http://www.justin.tv/
They have a lot of sports on it too.

Yeh. Im not that concerned about Chile, we've beat them the last couple of times we played them. However I just hope all the shit talking doesnt get to their head and make them feel less than what they are.

BTW Argentina ALWAYS has one of the best teams pound per pound and is the same story. Spain doesnt stay behind either and nadita papa!

Dunga is the head coach of Brazil. For this cup he sidelined some player in a rather conflicting manner.

This is ronaldinho in 2010 (ignore the silly music)

and this is what Ronaldinho did to Dunga when he was like 18

richyvrlimited 06-11-2010 05:30 AM

Rhonaldinio isn't the player he was he's wasted his talent and has been given many many many chances and everytime hasn't performed.

Was a good decision to drop him IMO.

Breaking news though, Henry has been caught taking drugs on camera and had been kicked out of the world cup!!

Sorry to say it but; your team has disappointed me. I can't understand why Lampard and Gerrard can't play a good game when they play together.

richyvrlimited 06-13-2010 08:59 AM

cos they're both attacing midfielders and neither wants to stay back and defend whilst the other bombs forward.

They never have played well together, ever, 6 England managers have tried, all have failled. It's beyond me why they keep trying.

King is now unsurprisingly injured so now we have a VERY slow centre of defence. Carrager is unbelievebly overrated and so one-paced it's scary. Terry has never had pace but used to get by but age has caught him up and he doesn't have the intelligence to compensate.

As soon as we encounter a team with pace they'll rip us to pieces.

Rooney kept dropping deeper and deeper to pick up play because we couldn't string 4 passess together beyond the 1/2 way line. SWP is all promise and no delivery on the left flank, Lennon is the same on the right. Effectively we had no midfield!

Don't get me started on Heskey, how many times was he caught offside. Sure he won a few balls up front, but bar that he did feck all. Yet the press here say he had a good game, HA!

Balls to it all ;) Can't wait till we're knocked out and I can actually enjoy the WC :)

buffon01 06-13-2010 10:38 AM

+1 on Lampard and Gerrad. Also why Heskey and not Bent. Bent was going through a great moment, and was playing very well. Also Walcott is another player I wouldve like to see.

richyvrlimited 06-13-2010 11:07 AM

Bent I agree, Walcott hasn't played well in ages, he's another all promise and no end product. He beats a man then always fluffs the cross, or just runs into blind alleys. Good decision to not take him IMO

buffon01 06-13-2010 11:15 AM

I guess I only saw the good side of him then, which were very few times at that.

England needs keepers, seriously wtf!. Keepers have been very solid and rather spectacular so far, except Green.

Cococarbine3 06-13-2010 03:23 PM

gospeed81 06-14-2010 08:12 AM

Yeah! World Cup! Finally here!

I watched the opening game in a hotel in Mexico where they were nice enough to open the bar that early in the morning. I was in my Houston Dynamo jersey amidst a sea of green, but still enjoyed it thoroughly. The emotion was palpable, and although I'd never wear another national team's colors, I was really pulling for my wife's "selección."

Mexico played pretty well, but they tend to get more impatient the closer they get to the goal. They couldn't seal the deal to save their lives, and they made their substitutions too late, as always. The Mexican team has had a huge rift since before the last World Cup, and they still can't hardly play together. I like Rafa Marquez, but blame him for most of this. If he hadn't scored their only goal so far and was doing such a good job distributing the ball I'd hate him. They're in the group of death anyhow, so unless they really shape up I fear that my wife will hang up her jersey early again this time around.

We cleared customs just in time the following day to grab a pizza on the way home and plop down in front of the USA/England game. I knew Gerrard was dangerous, but the 4' goal was devastating. I've heard some say that Donovan was a no-show, but it seemed to me that he was the one that kept pushing to keep the US side strong, and emotionally in the game. While it was a bad day for England, the US still played very well and that shouldn't be overlooked. If they continue to cohere as a team they can get out of the group and hopefully make it past the first knock out round. I don't see them going far, no matter how nice of a dream it is, due to all the very strong teams this year.

England however will bounce back, and look much better than the squad we saw Saturday. I would guarantee an English win if they were to play the USA again. They have been plagued with every manner of curse, folly, and foolishness during World Cups, and they always just get back to playing soccer...nothing mental despite their harsh press.

In a way a lot of teams are on a more equal field due to injuries or out-of-form stars, but much like F1 this year there are two groups, those that will put 4 goals up on the likes of Australia, and those that will quickly fall. A few of the teams in the middle, like Nigeria, the US and Mexico all have to decide very quickly which side of that play they'll be on.

I actually want to put Brazil in this group as well, but we'll see how they fare against the two tests in their group, Portugal and Ivory Coast, before I say they're a back-burner team, and they can very easily find their strengths and make it deep into the tournament. Their group will facilitate their improvement. Brazil tends to slack off against light opposition, and tough group play will mean they come into the next round strong.

Despite a mediocre performance Argentina is still one of my favs. I hate them for knocking out Mexico last time, but you can't argue with the play. I've seen a lot of Messi in the Spanish league, and more of Tevez in England, and both of them will only get better during the course of the tournament. The rest of Argentina's A-list should be consistent, and the goals will shape up.

So that's a few of the big 5 national teams covered. Germany looked very good, especially without their usual captain, and they should have no problem making the semifinals like last time. Italy won't repeat, but they are consistent and play very good ball. I haven't really checked out the French team much, but am sure they are hungry after last time, and they have some truly great players. A draw against Uruguay isn't a bad thing either. Whatever teams come out of that group will be solid contenders, and surviving this group would bring huge confidence to the French team.

Beware of African teams though. Their rising profile and the World Cup being there are no coincidence. Nigeria looked great besides failing to score. South Africa was a real roadblock for a cocksure Mexican team that apparently thought the host country would just roll over for them. And Ivory Coast is a dangerous squad, while Cameroon has been known to upset. Algeria's usually not too shabby either, but I wasn't real impressed with the little bit I watched in their loss yesterday.

All I know is I'm enjoying it.

Not really, an own goal and the second one that defender was too busy eating shit and didnt followed the play. I hope they really stepped it up. I want Holland to finaly do something.

Germany, also was meh... even though the game was in their favor the red card that Cahill gets is BULLSHIT. Im not saying that Australia wouldve been able to come back and tie or win but I think the card, and the goal that almost inmediately followed broke the Autralians. Ghana wil be a better test for the Germans.

Good job Japan, thinks will be interesting in that group.

Anybody watch Brazil vs. North Korea? I was pleasantly surprised by their game and even scoring against Brazil.

Italy need to step up their game. I was very dissappointed with their first match. Beginning was ok-ish but got worse and worse after conceding the 0-1. Was very relieved they actually scored the equaliser.

Had the keeper been positioned like he should that game wouldve probably ended in a 0-0. There was really not much going. They won't have it that easy against the other two gruup members. I was very surprised by the North Korean they did not look nervous and played rather well, and that goal showed a lot of skill from the chink attacker.

Italy  hopefully Pirlo gets well soon. Up until the goal from Paraguay, they did not look bad and were attacking, then it was shit from then on. Luck was on their side as Villar fucked up for Paraguay.

My country plays tomorrow bitches!!!!!!!!!!! Go Cuba :fawk:

Kind of like Ecuador last time around, your team is the one wild card I'm looking forward to watching. I also had a buddy from Quito at the time, so we rooted together between :makeout: sessions. Like Ecuador you guys have a good attacking style that should be entertaining, and Honduras can easily survive their group.

The lackluster performer to me has been France, and I really hope Mexico beats the shit out of them. They are usually consistently strong, but I don't see them coming together. I've still yet to see more than highlights though.

I thought Germany always came out swinging?

I would like to see Di Natale from the start too. Italy needs a player with spark to spice up the midfield. Pirlo will make a difference once he gets back. I would like to see Gattuso with rossi and pirlo in the middle with Di Natale and Pepe on the sides and gilardino up top.
