Citizen titanium eco-drive
This is my watch:
My first was 10 years old. I just replaced it this past week. Thing to remember - in watch speak, Water Resistant to 100m does not mean you can take it snorkeling. 100m is fine for recreational swimming in a pool. Do not take a watch into the ocean unless it is specifically built for that environment. Snorkeling down to 15m finally popped the seal on mine a month ago in Hawaii.
I use most of the features of this watch. The 3 alarms are nice. You set it to UTC then you just change the local timezone to change the display. It knows about Daylight savings and you can toggle that on/off per timezone. In the 10 years of my first one I never reset the time on it. It does not sync to atomic clocks, only the newer $600 models do that. I use the countdown timer and the stopwatch all the time cooking stuff on the grill (the third alarm, as well).
Edit: the watch is 300. It is no longer listed on Citizen's website, as it is an older model, but it is still available through ebay. I searched for a similar, comparable watch from any manufacturer and could not find one. My key criteria were titanium, solar or kinetic powered, with alarms. The new models that fit that from Citizen are their $600 pilot watches, and they have two alarms instead of three, and are not as functional for how I use the watch. I could not find a watch from another manufacturer that fit the bill.
Being titanium it is lightweight. No batteries to replace. For what it is, it's relatively non-flashy.

Pay 50-100 bucks for a phone, and 100 bucks a month so I can tell the time? and then I have to carry the damn thing. Uh, no thanks.
I have a phone on my desk at work, and another on my desk at home. Call, leave a message, and maybe I'll call you back. Other than that, I am unavailable. I don't get paid to be on call for anyone at any time.

Looks decent, but I'd never use an alarm. Possibly a chrono once in a while, but I'd prefer a plainer face. I have been looking for another Seiko 5 or one of the Eco citizens. Right now it's a matter of finding one that I like and getting a decent price.
I like the idea of the solar power. It just trips the geek in me.

Just get a Seiko 5 in a diver case. 150m or 200m rating means it won't die when you drop it in the sink.
Google the Seiko/Citizen Watch Forum or watchuseek.com forums and just peruse the classifieds until you find a good deal on one you like.
Or, for maximum toughness and utility, get one of the basic Casio G-Shocks. I have two, one white and one translucent.

I wish I could ditch mine, but it comes in handy just enough when I need a map, or to look something up on the internet, that I can't get rid of it. I talk on my phone maybe 30 minutes a month, if that. Data usage is probably only 250-500mb a month, mostly from 4chan images when I'm bored at work on a slow night.
I hate big, multi-dial watches, or diver watches. Sure they are nice since they do other little things, and you can take them swimming, but they are just so big and gaudy looking. Which is why I got my small Seiko 5, single dial, date, and the minimum water resistance, which means I can splash it with water, but not submerge. That does sort of suck since I wear it hiking and I spend a lot of time walking in knee to waist deep creeks on slick rocks. One day I'm bound to dunk it trying to avoid dunking my pack full of camera and safety gear, probably worth 20x the watch.

Opened up the old watch to see if I could fix it. I might be able to rewind the hairspring. Apparently, it was a hard shock and not the water that caused the damage, as the piece that holds the hairspring came loose. That also controls the timing, so that's why it was running slow.
Ordered the Seiko 5 #SNK601 from Amazon today; less than 60 bucks, shipped. The other one lasted pretty well. I'm also gonna get a nicer Eco power one, but I haven't decided on what model yet.

Helson, Halios, and Armida are all small 'boutique' brands which sell nice Asian manufactured cases w/ sapphire lenses and real deal Swiss ETA movements
I bought a 1000 meter diver with a Swiss ETA date movement and 4mm domed lense for <$500. It gets regular beach time and has been far more reliable than my 2k Oris which gets babied.
