Default Xbox 360 3 red lights (which fix works?)

So I have the dreaded ring of death. I did a google serach and it seems there is more than 1 way to fix it. Who here has had this problem and fixed it their self? What did you do?

i have not attempted to fix it myself, but microsoft will fix it for free. have you sent it in before and this is the replacement that got the red rings? if so you can demand that they send you a new unit, and they'll send you a brand new one.

I did the heatsink removal and cleaned the processor and re attached, working fine since september (did it during hurricane ike, i had a lot of free time)

I used the video with the chick doing it. I substituted goo-gone for rubbing alcohol, worked much much faster.

I found a gut locally on craigslist that fixes them for $50. Says it's a permanent fix. Id rather pay the 50 then deal with MS.

All 5 of my 360s were bought used (for hacking). I bought two of them with the 3RLOD. One of them was fixed permanently and one was a PITA and kept breaking. I did the 12 penny fix, the thermal paste fix, the separate the fans for better airflow fix, the mod your case fix, xclamp fix and probably a few other things that I cannot remember now. It would run for a week or so and then when we were doing some LAN gaming it would go out on me. I finally got pissed off, wrapped a towel around it and let the damn thing burn up on purpose (yeah, don't make me angry!). So, what is the moral of the story? I don't know except sometimes nothing you do will fix it. My guess is the 12 cent fix would be the best bet (and the cheapest). If you are going to hack it and void your warranty anyway then open it up and see if you can fix it. I would not pay someone $50 to do it for me. I did my first one (kind of) like this (guy was selling them as FIXED refurbs). Paid extra money for him to put it in a high tech oven and redo the solder (you'll find him on xbox-scene). It was a waste of money because it just started dying again anyway.

FWIW, In the end I modified all my 360s. I would do a 12 cent fix on them as well as thermal paste and xclamp. I also cut out the metal/plastic from behind the fans (don't stick your fingers behind my 360s!) and used cut up lids from butter tubs to cover the heat sinks (makes air go THROUGH them for cooling) and to separate the fans so one does the GPU and one does the CPU. I haven't had any further problems on the four remaining non-burnt up 360s.

The best option is obviously the free microsoft fix, but that could be a problem if its used. Check to see if the x-box has been registered, if not and its new enough you may still be able to have them fix it.

Okie dokie. I don't have strong feelings one way or the other, I just don't like Microsoft I guess, so not buying an Xbox is kinda like my super-not-accomplishing-anything-they-still-have-lots-of-money-and-dominate-the-market way of depriving Microsoft of a trivial amount of income.

Speaking of video games, I went through CoD4 awhile back and took pictures of all of the arabic to use in class, check this one out, it reads "Infinity Ward":

They stuck things like this all over the game, one says "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" and another says "Death to the enemies of Al Asad". Some of it is pure jibberish and others is backwards but some of the arabic actually says something.

Thread hijack! OK, if we are speaking of games I hadn't really touched my 360 for quite a while. Lately I got FEAR 2 which has turned out to be a pretty good game (will probably beat it today). A few days before I got it I had beat COD5 World At War. The game was pretty good BUT what I really like is the **** Zombie mini game you can unlock at the end. My wife and I invited the girl across the street over one night and we started playing three way (hmmm, that sounds funny <G>). Anyway, she comes over a couple of times a week now to play. It would be much better to have four players but **** Zombies is indeed a pretty fun stress reliever.

you can cure your red ring of death by heating up your ball grid array.

a 360 is tempting to me even though I have a PS3 because I have an original xbox (is it worth anything?) and a bunch of games still. and halo 3. and whatever that new halo jib jab is.
