Tell him $400 without the mags, then put it on Gunbroker for $600. Throw in a free "Democrats Suck" sticker or Anti-Obama t-shirt and watch the bidding war go to $700. Then take the $300 you made and go to Midway:
AR Stoner 16" 300blk barrel. $200
DPMS Slickside receiver. $87
The gas-tube/handguard/gas-block/hider you may have lying around, but stick with UTG stuff to keep it cheap if you need to buy. The barrel-receiver combo there for under $300 is top-quality and that's what counts. There's a $35 off $300 Midway coupon code I found, which makes your handguard or gas-block free... you can certainly order a parts complete 300blk upper-minus for under $350 shipped.
I think I like the "piece it together" option better than a DSA since you can choose your own handguard and rail. I plan on using mine for hunting, and don't need any combat-type stuff, hence the slickside... I'll probably just get a thread protector too and skip any kind of flash-hider to save a few bucks... low-pro gas blocks are $10, or a railed UTG one is like $15... for shooting deer inside 300yds, bare bones lets me put a little bit more money towards a scope.

My question about magnified red-dots for a civilian is... what are you going to shoot with it? If it's paper, then it's a complete waste of money. If it's animals, then you want a real scope. If it's for competition, then you're out to lunch. The only place one of those makes sense is in combat unless it's simply a toy.
Your average Aimpoint Micro or clone (Primary Arms, Konus, Bushnell TRS25) is going to give you everything you need for the Zombies. If you're worried about actual urban combat during the apocalypse or societal breakdown, and plan to engage humans out to 300yds... then a magnified dot starts making sense... other than that, stick with good iron sites or a real scope. For home defense, NOTHING other than good iron sites makes sense.

Sam, I appreciate the detailed response, thank you for the feedback.
My AR is currently only used to punch holes in paper. My AR is an M&P 15 Sport, I haven't changed anything on the rifle. I can shoot a decent group at 50 or 100 yards, but can't see exactly where they hit the target. The range I shoot at goes to 300 yards, so my thought was a magnified optic would help/entertain me at the range.
I was hoping a magnified red dot would be the best of all worlds, but it doesn't sound like it is.

Picked up a Ruger SR40C for the wife for our carry. We haven't shot it yet, but I have big hopes.
If it out performs my Glock 23 I may replace it with one too. So far I like the ergonomics and it just feels nicer. I love my Glock cause it eats everything. But for carry it is a bit of a brick. I've gained some weight lately, but even the 23 is hard to hide on my smallish frame. We'll see I guess.
and a preemptive pic before questions about the 23's sights. TAS sight. I like it. Not the most accurate, but quick sighting. I'm still use to the M68's from in the service. Pic isn't perfect. Not left handed. It's either shakey gun sight or shaky camera.
