Thanks for all the advice guys. Gonna mull it over. I thought I'd be able to build an AR around 30in...but will probably have to go with a pistol caliber carbine to do so.


I did a bit of reading on the M1A and it looks like an excellent gun. But **** they are expensive.

I had a Springfield SOCOM 16 for a while. Nice rifle. Decided to sell it because (1) I can't afford to shoot .308 much at all, (2) if I have a .308, it really needs to be at least 18" for decent ballistics, and (3) .308 out of a compensated 16" barrel is fricking LOUD. Seriously, the muzzle blast was unlike anything I've shot.

 

Forgot (4) it weighs a ton. Seriously, if you're wanting something maneuverable inside a house, an 11+ lb rifle isn't it. Add a mag with 20 rds of .308 and I bet it's close to 13 lbs.

My house plan is relatively simple. 12 GA pump shotgun for the cone of death at the bedroom door. Pistol with attached light for walking the house so I have a hand free to hit wall switchs, open doorknobs, etc. The final puzzle piece will be a lightweight AR for when the **** hits the fan and I have project power all over my neighborhood. The Saiga/AK has that job at the moment but I don't love it.

Here is an interesting fact: 10 pounds of .223 Rem brass contains approximately 750 cases. That auction contains approx 2.5 million casings.. Assuming this was Lake City M855 62 grain penetrator, a 1000 round case of M855 is $359.79 or a little over $0.35/round. $0.35 * 2,591,175 comes to $932.278.85 or roughly 2592 cases of 1000 rounds bringing a total weight of approx 66,630 pounds of raw loaded rounds.

The M4 Carbine Cyclic rate is 700-950rpm, so assuming you had some way to belt feed 2.5 million rounds continuous into an M4 carbine it would take roughly 3700 minutes or 61 straight hours of fire. Think the barrel would melt after about the first two minutes of fire..
