Legends car. Good condition, often with tons of spares, for 8K. Register as kit car. Done. If you need reverse, do it through the starter motor.

Or swap in an R1 setup.

1300 Lbs. RWD. Cheap. Toyo driveline. 125-175Hp pretty reliably.

Looks awesome and you have the added benefit of not being a poser.

I guess if it really had to be comfy and quiet, Sc300 with 2JZGTE and 6 speed, my wife drives the comfy car, I want something fun.

clickety

The wheels are a bit blingy (I'm thinking RPF1s 17/18) and the interior needs to be taken down a notch, but otherwise a tastefully done (dat carbon) NSX. All the services done, clean CARFAX, etc. We've already agreed on a price contingent upon inspection and test drive, to be done by my dad since I'm deployed again right now. He just won't be up that way again until the 9th, so the waiting is killing me.

I didn't know about the Cantrell Concepts exhaust until I saw his ad, it sounds nice:

Bourgeoisie thread is bourgeoisie-ish. I guess as member of the humble proletariat, I'll offer the following:

Keep my miata, of course. Do the koni yellows with GC. 15x7.5 6ul, plus I'd get my winter wheels powder-coated. Maybe repaint a few panels, stone chips and stuff. Hell, I'd buy a hardtop too, defrost and headliner. I plan to do most of this eventually, but it'll be a slow process.

A 4cyl, 4wd, Nissan or Toyota pickup, I'd prefer black. I'd remove as much rust as possible, and rhino-line everything; plus do a little frame modification to prevent the water traps that rot out the structure. Ultimate parts hauler and winter tank. Plus good gas mileage. Something about those simple old trucks makes me smile just like I do in the R.

A classic VW bug, carbed, air-cooled, simple. Probably like blue, although white is pretty nice. I'd convert it to 12 volt if necessary, and install a AM/FM radio, with a tape deck, so I could use a tape adapter for my Ipod. Probably keep the interior 100% stock, but replace the ancient paper speakers with something a bit more modern.

EDIT:

Very nice, I'd love to have a NSX.

Hows the deployment going? I'm supposed to Afshmanistan around August. It'll be my 1st (I won't be a boot anymore, yay)
Good luck with everything.

Because of the recent addition of an '08 C6 Z06 to our stable and price cap to our fantasies (boo), I though I should update my earlier post:

Daily driver is either beater, bone stock 91 that I actually really enjoy driving or the 95R project car. If I couldn't drive a Miata however..

Daily
C6 Z06, bone stock other than prototype HVT single adjustable dampers. Kinda stupid for a daily but that's what I've been doing this past week. Once the s*** eating grin is gone I'll put it under a cover and go back to the Miatas.
Prius. I don't really get a chance to drive the one I bought for mom it but it's always fun geeking out on the dash and hypermiling.

Enduro
550whp, 2400lb Southwest tour/SRL stock car set up for road course with some a little aero, dry break and air jacks. Suprisingly affordable to build since most of the parts come from Summit Racing and are stupid cheap.

Sprint racing
650whp, 2400lb Southwest tour/SRL stock car set up for road course with some insane aero

HPDE
Still prefer the 95R to anything else. The C6Z with a set of BFG Rivals on 18's will be nearly as much fun but its kinda too fast. You're not in traffic and dicing with other Miatas, you're just waiting for little gaps to blast at 110mph through wearing the OEM 3 pt belt and airbag = long term not a great plan. The Z06 is too nice a car to hack up with roll bar, race seats, 6 pts, air bag delete, etc. So yeah, the same FR-S as my hypothetical autocross build would also be the HPDE car with race seats, harnesses and roll bar. Then it becomes a crappy daily.. so there you go.

Autocross
Urgh. Nothing as fun and cheap as a Miata. Maybe an FR-S with 17x9's, 255/40 Toyo RR's, coilovers, I/H/E and reflash.

The realization is that even with a significantly bigger budget and forced to drive something else, I would still pine for my wee little Miatas.

Don't buy a Beetle.

I had two of them. A '76 Standard, and a '71 Super Cabrio (both blue.) Beetles are horrid, atrocious cars. Their engine redefine the concept of "gutless," the "handling" is laughable, the interior ergonomics are surprisingly bad, the shifter feels like it's coupled to the transmission with a piece of limp spaghetti... They just have absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Hell, I think that the late 60's Karmann Ghia convertible is one of the most beautiful cars ever created, and I still wouldn't want one as a daily driver.

Jeremy Clarkson really is spot on the money with his assessment of them.

Speaker. Singular. One speaker. In the dash, beside the speedometer, facing directly rearward.

I suppose a sub-30k car is bourgeoisie-ish to some, lol.

It's going well, I'm not at a total shithole (relatively speaking) this time.

Good to hear. Word is I could be going to camp cupcake (leatherneck), but we're still 5 months out so you know how that goes.

In keeping with the thread, I'd maybe like a C5 Z06 when I get back from the deployment. That or a MSM, I haven't decided. I have a hankeren' for V8.

LS7 in an MSM?

Definitely know how that goes. Good luck man and stay safe.

Thread contribution - pics of some photoshopped wheels. I kinda dig white or silver, gunmetal or black would be too much darkness.

I like them quite a bit. Gutless does describe the power band though, you need to drive with momentum. I do like the shift feel, and the steering isn't too bad. Doing the DD routine with unassisted brakes would take some getting used too, but I gave up power steering, and don't really notice it anymore.

EDIT: It'd probably end up being a "fun" car, not sure I'd want to DD it, when there'd be a miata next to it.

You can't drive it with momentum, as it's incapable of turning a corner at more than 10 KPH without spinning.

The shift feel is the automotive equivalent of throwing a hot-dog down a hallway, if you catch my drift.

"Bad" doesn't even begin to describe the steering feel. Even farm tractors don't use worm-gear steering boxes anymore, and for good reason. Between the 90į of free-play in the wheel, and the fact that the front end has a mind of its own, you will definitely sharpen your reflexes. We are talking about a car in which the introduction of ball-joints into the front suspension was considered a major upgrade when they were made standard in 1969.

The brakes were actually quite good, once they switched from cable-operated to hydraulic.

On the plus side, you will never run out of ice. Producing it is the only thing that the stock solex carburetor excels at.

I'm being totally serious here. If you want a fun, cheap city car, buy a 1991-1994 Geo Metro LSi convertible. I've owned one of those as well, and it was far less awful than the Beetles.

May: You decadent capitalist pig. Ownership of a rev counter is theft.
Clarkson: Look at the colour. This is the colour of a prosthetic limb.
May: You've got wipers on your headlights!
Clarkson: They don't work.
May: That's not the point! It's aspirational!
