I like new tech. I love the technology. However, I don't want to own it because it's harder to fix in the garage with a hammer. And too expensive. Ideally the wife would have something new, practical, reliable, and fun. I'd have 3 or more things to keep running or modding. Sorta what I have now minus the wife having a new ish ride.

I thought the idea was to replace it with other affordable (under $20K) cars?

I like emilio's list. As a buddy once said, "with enough money, there would be no daily driver; there would only be backup race cars..."

I would really struggle to find anything that I thought could be completed for under $20k that I would replace (the end goal of) my Miata with. Maybe someone else's LS1-NA Miata or an EJ20/EJ25 swapped GC8 Impreza.

Anything else, realistically, would be over $20k to be done to my standards. In the $20k - $30k range, it would be an LS#-FD RX-7 without question. It ticks all my boxes. A cool alternative would be an Evo6 (or possibly an Evo9).

I won't bother going to cars above that threshold because I could not see me tracking one without sponsorships, given the old adage that "you should never track a car you are not mentally and financially prepared to push off a cliff."

1988 Porsche 911

Basically the only car I would consider replacing the Miata with. I think I have out grown sports cars. I have been seriously shopping for a classic to restomod and a luxo barge for a daily.

This.

I'd love a 914 with LSx or Subie mill
240/260Z
FD Rx7 with reliability mods or LSx
I actually often miss my Fiat x1/9
BMW 2002 or Datsun 510

Only newer cars I like that aren't hellaciously pricey are S2000, used Z06, and probably the BR-Z/FR-S.

New cars make me nervous. Always afraid something expensive is gonna break....

Also, even if I won the lottery I don't see me giving up Miatas, only adding to the fleet.... Too much fun and bang for the buck; easy to work on too.

If price were no object, I'd have a Singer 911.

Alternatively, for a bit less, an early, restomod 911 RS-style.

For a pimp cruiser, it would have to be a '65 Lincoln Continental. However, my garage is physically not long enough to fit one.

Again, I don't think I could do any of those (to my standards) for sub-$20k which is a random and totally arbitrary price cap I am sticking with.

I attempted to replace the Miata with an 06 GTO for a comfortable daily cruiser. I say attempt because not only did I fail to sell the Miata it would replace, but I bought another Miata in the process. I still log more miles in either Miata than I do in the GTO.

The GTO is fantastic as a DD, problem is, I still find myself enjoying the Miata more. Now the GTO hasn't left the garage in almost a year....

I use to like the GTO, but since you can get a C5 or LS1 F body for less I just don't see the point. Also I think you cant get wide tires on the back or something, which is gay.

Hmm some remarkably similar tastes we have
Datsun 510 or BMW 2002 is on my list for a fun car-almost bought a 2002 last week.
Now an ultimate vehicle would be something like this
1973 BMW 3.0 CS for Sale: Custom BMW CS/M6
ahh I love the shape of E9 BMWs
an SLC with a Dinan BMW V10
993 RS
RX8 with 3 rotor swap
Caterham R500
some kind of kit car swap with Alfa V6
Eagle Jag E-type speedster
TVR Sagaris?

I guess. The title was "low-mid", for me that's 7-8 grand, tops and that includes the money for the build.

I don't see the appeal in paying 15-20 grand for a new, ugly car that is slow. To each their own.
