i am not coming down on Saturday, stupid co-worker won't cover for me even tho i worked a double to cover for him yesterday.....

My car will be there tho, Paul will be driving it down to get it dyno'd for me.

Braineack 11-10-2009 10:03 AM

Ha, nothing but pimpin' hard. Maybing adjusting the gain on my subwoofer.

Y8s might be out, something green is leaking from his motor now :(

I think we are meeting around 9am at my house friday and driving straight up to the karting place. Don't forget your helmet. A lumbar pillow ill save your life when karting all day.

I'm hopefully getting a new radiator put in tomorrow.

I was building a vband setup but then the clutch slave cyl broke and I bought a new subaru so that gets my time now, as well as removing all the cool parts off my old suby.

I will give you my license to pimp.

also, the green was gone from my radiator very early yesterday. it's all clear now :(

Berrodin by my house usually has the slave cylinders in stock and cheap. Lemme know if you want me to pick one up for you this week. I know the master cylinders go for 50 and change. Im not sure about the slaves.

Yea. Jes (Paul's GF) is bringing her Laguna and Tim's wife usually comes too.

miataspeed2005 11-11-2009 03:41 PM

Mother effer weather calls for rain on Saturday. I'm gonna have to start taping my back window up. Man I really hate driving the miata on the rain.

ArtieParty 11-11-2009 03:47 PM

Only a 30% chance of rain. We had that last time and it turned out to be a really nice day.

TurboTim 11-11-2009 04:47 PM

I think more times than not it's raining on the way down or at least has good chances of rain, but it has so far been beautiful on the past dyno days I've gone to, which is most.

the_man 11-12-2009 08:28 AM

Looks like I will be joined by other half who wants to learn about turboz. Hoping to get my buddy to come as well so he can dyno his stock '99, realize he has less horsepower than an Amish family going to Sunday services, and get off the turbo fence.

saint_foo 11-12-2009 03:19 PM

^cool, if he needs to talk to someone who mulled it over and was on the fence for a bit....look for me.

I just had the Mishimoto radiator installed w/ the stock fans....not a happy fit. At least all seems like it went well.

got a fresh oil change too (Motul 8100). That's something else everyone that's dynoing should consider, along w/ doublechecking lines, coolant, wires, etc. Nothing's worse than seeing a motor blow on the dyno, spew oil everywhere, or whatever else.

the_man 11-12-2009 03:56 PM

He came with me to the last MT dyno day, he just didn't want to dyno his car knowing that as soon as he did, he'd NEED a turbo, rather than WANT a turbo. It was bad enough for him to see some of the numbers other people were putting up.

Oh, and no, still not planning to bring my Miata, so somebody else will have to take the "lowest power of the day" award.

ScottFW 11-12-2009 04:11 PM

I will "probably" make it up there Saturday morning. Won't be dynoing though. I just like to watch. :giggle:

miataspeed2005 11-12-2009 04:11 PM

I got my datalog working and I may have to make my final tunning touches at the dyno. Since I have no time at all lately with school and work. And Friday night I'll be chaging my oil and intalling Mazda comp mm.
I'm super excited I'm gonna pop my dyno cherry

For those who haven't left yet, I snipped this from the May dyno day thread so you can save $4 by hopping off 95 one exit early (from the south).

From Elkton Road, you can either take Otts Chapel Road to Old Baltimore Pike, or go up to Route 4 (Christina Parkway/Chestnut Hill Road) to Rt. 72 to Old Baltimore Pike.

Here, I drew a map.

assuming it is downpouring, are they going to still run it? Last dyno day I got 1/2 way there and got a call from Paul saying they were butfuks and scared of running the dyno, only to let us on after a half our.

(yea sometimes it pays to sleep in)

EDIT: Meg isn't coming...she only thinks it's interesting if I dyno something. Ha.

Braineack and shui... sheu... shiu... Lars. When I caught back up after taking the scenic Harbor Tunnel (thought it would be faster, wasn't) I noticed you were a man down. Did you leave neogenesis on the side of the highway in Baltimore? And is he armed?

shuiend 11-14-2009 05:36 PM

So on the way home from the dyno. About mile marker 103 on 95 South in Maryland. Brians motor blew. We had just gotten on 95 and he was in boost and I saw some white smoke coming out his exhaust. I called him to let him know. He said it was probably just running rich. A few minutes later a ton of smoke started pouring out. We pulled over and his engine bay was covered in oil. It was shooting out the valve cover whenever he would get into boost. So he believes the rings are gone. He decided to keep going and to stay out of boost. I am hoping he made it home ok.

He split off on 295 or something because it was quicker for him to get home.

So your telling me he made the least hp of the day and blew up?

Brian (neogenisis) made something like 250hp. Scott will prob post the graphs later. He thinks the rings went from the extra 6 degrees of spark he added in on the dyno.

On the bright side of things. I did give him a set of rings today for a 1.6.

Neo's was the silver metallic one, the last car to run on the dyno.

sucks big time, the dyno graph or my ears didn't notice any detonation, nor did your knock sensor, maybe serious high egts from all that timing

disturbedfan121 11-15-2009 12:35 AM

so my car had water coming out of the BOV? how would that even happen? Its vertical lol facing down. wtf! lol

18psi 11-15-2009 02:49 AM

I'm confused as hell: did :brain: blow his motor? Or neogenesis?

saint_foo 11-15-2009 07:34 AM

Brian - sorry to see the car have a not-so-happy ending. Do you remember the AFRs? Could you possibly have run rich and wash the ring landings, or do you think it's the timing? I guess when you tear into it you'll find out.

Lars - thanks for sticking w/ him. I had to meet my wife's co-workers for dinner and take them out as a belated wedding gift. No UFC last night...just recorded it. I was rooting for you in karting, even tried to help you out by PITting Kris...

Tom - thanks for hosting the event, the hospitality, the tied time that race (22.068!), and everything else. Your house rocks, especially that garage floor. MUST DO. Good luck w/ the car, I'm dying to see it finished.

Scott - you bastard. I think you beat my fastest time during karting.

Tim - I can't say enough great things about the turbo kit you built me. It's friggin' wonderful! I guess once we get dynotune time down here, maybe we'll tune for 15 lbs. I was extremely happy with the power delivery, design, etc. Was a teensy bit bummed that we didn't hit 300whp....but we still didn't tune on a tune, just tweaked a bit. Plus, I suck at dyno pulls. Next time I'll be better, like start at 2,200rpms in 4th, instead of 4k...

Paul - thanks for a great base tune. Above 2k rpms, the car is a beast. I hope you had fun last night...happy birthday!

Artie - great meeting you finally! Thanks for helping Paul tune.

Everyone else: great meeting you all. Scott, thanks for saving us $4 by avoiding the tollbooths.

-Ed

all three of them are running too lean IMO 13's.
bruceW's is a N/a V8 so hes fine but the other too i wouldnt feel too comfortable with that. i like my 11.5 afr except after 6k when i drop to 10's wish i had more time to tune and make another 10-15 HP.
i had a blast tho and i will do it all over again.

neogenesis2004 11-15-2009 12:46 PM

I think it was the timing, definitely a broken ringland or 2, or 3, or 4. I drove it home making no more than 30psi oil pressure because if I got into boost it would just eject oil out of the breather and smoke out whoever was behind me. What blows my mind is that there was no ping on the dyno either heard or logged. I'm taking today off to cool down, over the next week I'm just going to do a stock rebuild of Brain's old block sitting in my garage and put that in the car, and swap the t3 60trim compressor back on. Then I'll just stick with 13-15psi to be safe and still have a fun car. Plus I need something to test my super (not so secret) WI project on.

I was very disappointed in my output, both in delivery and in total HP. I was expecting north of 275@19psi, so I think that compressor/trubine just are not a good match.

So today is pizza/football day, and I'll rebuild the motor during the week. Now to get Brain to convince his wife to let him have another Saturday off to help me swap motors....

Braineack 11-15-2009 01:03 PM

My wbo2 has never matched their readings. I was logging 11.5:1, they for the past 5 years have always read 1 point leaner, even without a cat.

Mach929 11-15-2009 02:25 PM

i wasn't holding boost and i hit 104 degrees IAT on the dyno so i need to get off my ass and get a bigger intercooler and totally redo my piping, oh and finally do my cops

mann 11-15-2009 02:34 PM

Glad I came out, it was great seeing all the FI'd miatas--sucks about the motor Brian, I filmed all your runs and I didn't hear a single ping. To be honest though all the ping my car's knock sensor has picked up I never heard either so a set of det-cans begi style is probably in order.

Their wideband must be off...I have two, my stock OEM one and an AEM and both were reading 11-11.5:1 but his graph showed 12. Everyone else seemed to be lean also as the day wore on so theirs was probably off by at least .5. I am running a cat.

My car is reading 10.2s and his was 11.5s do you think his wb is off?

neogenesis2004 11-15-2009 02:54 PM

My money is on yes. My ecu was autotuning to 11.4 and his was reading me at like 12.5+.

The lack of video of the ruptured heater hose and ensuing geyser is fail. Miataspeed2005 took the faceful of coolant pretty well, though.
