Post images and give away your copyright
Just about to post some images, and the warning about the content guidelines caught my eye,
From the ToU
2A ...
You automatically grant and assign to us, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant and assign to us, a perpetual, irrevocable, unlimited, fully paid, fully sub-licensable (through multiple tiers), worldwide license to copy, perform, display, distribute, prepare derivative works from (including, without limitation, incorporating into other works) and otherwise use any content that you post. You also expressly grant and assign to us all rights and causes of action to prohibit and enforce against any unauthorized copying, performance, display, distribution, use or exploitation of, or creation of derivative works from, any content that you post (including but not limited to any unauthorized downloading, extraction, harvesting, collection or aggregation of content that you post).
Am I reading too much into this? Anyone had any issues with the site owners reusing content? Anyone done any checks on their content to see if it is being reused, either by the owners or anyone else? I have seen this provision elsewhere, and generally would say 'stuff them, not posting my images under those T&C', this is effectively a licence to steal, except it is not stealing, I am giving it away for free, with absolutely no recourse. Or is this more about data harvesting that images per se?
I guess there is limited scope for the sort of photos posted here to be reused under these T&C, but then again I have seen some pretty good ones, especially in the photo thread.
Maybe my search skills are below par, but I couldn't find any content on this subject, but I'd be surprised if someone hadn't noticed and wondered about it.

I have noticed that the images you post on this forum, whether you upload them directly or use an outside hosting provider, after a certain period of time are automatically saved and stored on the forum's server. This means even if you take down or stop link sharing your photos, they are still saved here on the forum. Combined with editing posts being locked out means they are here to stay unless you can convince an admin to remove them. Makes sense for maintaining a database of knowledge for the future, but once I realized that was happening I am more selective of the images I share here.
I also had one of my photos from this forum show up on the MT.net Facebook page with no credit to me but I did get a PM saying something like "cool pic we shared it on our FB."

Interesting. I have just checked the other sites I have posted photos. One has almost exactly the same wording. The other says you retain your copyright. The third is off-line. My photo hosting site also makes no claims on my copyright, so it seems clear that acquiring all rights is not necessary for the operation of the site.
I really doubt that there is a lot of money to be made from reusing images, so other than the odd FB repost and similar I think it unlikely we will see one of our photos on a Times Square billboard or similar. That leaves two possibilities. It allows the site to generate revenue from reuse/data mining by third parties; or, it was/is an opportunistic no-cost grab for rights that may have little or no value now, but may in the future.
I guess we will know soon. If site management says 'gee fellas, we didn't notice that, it was just something the lawyers slipped in, we are going to change it', that would be welcome, a good outcome (in my mind). Or site management might say 'sorry fellas, we really want those rights, if you don't like it don't post'; or site management says nothing, except that saying nothing is the same as saying 'we do want those rights over your images'. The corollary of that is that somebody thinks that images have value, or might have value in the future.

I've actively lurked on these boards for a bit now. Just haven't been posting. Very interested in the 3D printed intake thread, and I've exchanged emails with the creator. Yes, I am trying to meet the classifieds requirements by posting semi-relevant posts.
Is this still your #1 goal? I am "jumping right in" and being met with less-than-respectful posts by multiple moderators.
"Our #1 goal is to have an enjoyable, respectful, and most important, active forum environment. You will notice there is a fair amount of offtopic chatter on the site so jump right in."
