I've looked at that since the next car I build is gonna be a rally car, and I have a pile of miata parts. But a miata would be very difficult to get a logbook for rally. Most series in the US strongly encourage factory steel over your head.

"encourage" is not quite strong enough. It is a requirement in RA, and NASA. Also there is no way you could get enough roll bar to make it safe and still have room for bodies inside. Plus once you mount lights to the front you would not be able to see the road. You would never get 15 to fit in the in the wheel wells and still have wheel travel.

All that being said, there is a couple or MR2's out there...NO ******* way would I get in one of those at stage speeds.

here's the rule if anyone cares, it's as specific of a ruling as I can find in any of the rulebooks.

Page 50 of the Rally America rule book:
Movable metal sunroofs and/or roof panels have been fixed in the
closed position. Glass or plastic sunroofs and/or roof panels are not
allowed. Glass or plastic sunroofs and/or roof panels shall have
been replaced with metal attached by steel fasteners or welding and
shall be fixed in the closed position. The finished work must be of
equal or greater strength than the permanent roof.

By the letter of the law you can graft a steel top on, but a gravel rally miata is still not a great idea.

I always wonder how many rally spectators are killed every year in Europe. Sometimes it looks like the crowd at the Tour de France only with rally cars doing 85 on gravel over jumps and twisties.

I'll always remember an interview I saw with a rally driver. When he was asked about the fans on the side of the road he said, "we just see them as scenery, if not, we couldn't do this."
