on a side note, I have been trying to figure out what my next mod up to $500 needs to be. I don't think i can find a MS for that price. I also don't have any tuning shops closer than 3 hours away. I have been thinking a oil cooler and more gauges for my DDM works radio surround. Thoughts??
The Miata.net thing really explains the silly 1.6 fanboi-isms.

Gauges for what?

If i had $500, i'd throw it in the bank and save more for worthwhile modifications.

You should be able to find a Megasquirt for that price quite easily. Spam more posts and you'll be able to see the classifieds.

My oil pressure gauge died the other day, so i bought an aftermarket one. I also want to monitor my engine vitals a little closer. I already have another 1.6L sitting in my garage. It will get built over the next couple years.

Yea well, I have a PC, but i don't trust myself to tune my car. I would probably find a way to screw it up.

If you are on a budget and you don't want to tune it yourself, it's probably better just to quit at this point.

let me rephrase, I would like to learn more about the tuning process. I just want to make sure i don't do a stupid mistake and then blow my engine up. I know i need get a wideband to monitor the a/f ratio for tuning and also having other gauges to monitor the motor helps as well. I just really don't want to have to swap motors for the third time in a year.

just to clarify, i bought 93 with a bad motor and had it rebuilt. The engine builder screwed up the piston rings and ended up burning a quart of oil a week. I then had to swap a used motor back into that car to get it running.

So you paid someone to do something you didn't want to screw up, and they screwed up.

Now you want to pay someone to tune your car?

Then get a megasquirt and get to tuning.

Then gently raise the spoon that you have delicately just filled with delicious cow's milk and Lucky Charms to your mouth, opening your mouth as you do so, and deposit the contents of the spoon into your oral cavity. NOTE: Do not attempt a deposit until the concave portion of the spoon has entered your gaping maw in its entirety.

Good try, but I think OP's feeding is best left to the experts at this point.

i'm sorry that i have never once messed with an ECM or ECU. the car is my DD and i don't really want to mess it up. I will look up the reviews and such on the megasquirt and see if there are any disadvantages the MS has, that others don't have. I will check out any install threads as well as initial setup threads. Are there any particular members' threads i should look up?

I see NO problems at all with keeping your 1.6, boosting it properly, and having fun. However, trying to convince yourself that the 1.6 is better than the BP4W that comes with the 99 is full retard. Maybe the NA miata is more fun than the NB to you? That would make more sense. A BP4W in your NA would blow your mind.

If "don't talk about how much you like your 1.6" is the first rule of Miataturbo.net, the second rule is "don't turbo your DD without a backup car".

If you don't want to mess up your DD, leave it stock or get another DD.

yea, i said earlier that it is just more fun to me. It's not always about speed. It's the enjoyment factor as well.

I will agree that his will blow pass mine everyday of the week. Mine will never be better than a 1.8. I know this, but I just like the underdog kind of thing.

i have a backup vehicle, but it won't be running for a little bit.

That is ******* stupid. Reminds me of the ------s on CR who say they'd rather lose a race with ITB's than win a race using a turbo. Like somehow the visor tilted bro in the mustang is gonna give you mad props for not keeping up.

I put a megasquirt in my my DD having never used a soldering gun let alone touching an ECU. It really is not as complicated as it seems. You can get a good base map for a stock engine and you should only have to tune the fuel which tunerstudio can do automatically while you drive. Sometimes you just have to jump in head first. You will also be starting out N/A where there is much more wiggle room without blowing the engine.

you misunderstand. I like my motor, but there is another 1.6 in my garage that i will be fully building for a turbo. My goal for that motor is at least 250 hp, but really want 300hp. That is a goal that is going to take a very very long time. If i had a 1.8 in my garage then i would use that, but i don't.
