Default VR6 to Miata Swap

Hey everybody, I would like to introduce myself, mostly my car. It's a 1992 mx5 na. I have been reading on this forum a lot the past month and came across an opportunity to ask a question that I couldn't find. My friend has a 1999 jetta(bora) vr6. He totaled it but the engine is completely fine. Is it possible to swap the vr6 into the miata? Can I use the same tranny? What kind of major mods have to be done? Also has anyone ever tried this and succeeded?

You want to put a FWD VR6 and transmission in a miata?

Yeah, go for it. It will be easy. VW stuff is like legos, or so I hear. Next most popular engine swap for the miata next to the honduh V6.

Been one around central Florida for a couple years now. Though I think it sits most of the time any more

Don't take this the wrong way. But I sort of feel like if you're asking those questions. You shouldn't be thinking about doing this kind of swap. It should be pretty obvious something like this is super rare and will require a ton of custom work. If you're one of those guys with awesome fab skills and access to a full shop, then I'd be sure you could likely figure out something.

If you're one of those guy's who's never done extensive fab work let alone his own work on cars but "has a friend" who can do it with you. Just stop right now. You can't just swap any old engine you can think of into any car and expect it to work.

Just as a thought, why would a vr6 motor remotely bolt up to a miata transmission? You will need some sort of adapter plate, and that's even if the motor spins the same way as the miata does. I don't know a lot about vdubs so this is purely speculation. If you can't get that motor to work with the miata transmission that now means you need to find a rwd vw trans that fits and will work with the vr6. That also means you have to figure out how to connect that to the miata rear end, or find a replacement rear end etc. This is only just scratching the surface, you'd also need to figure out an ecu solution etc.

So unless you are very serious about doing some huge amount of legwork to get something going. It's sort of silly to even consider doing this. But if you do, start a build thread and document everything so we can copy you.

No not at all. The only reason why I was considering it, because he was going to sell me the engine for a couple hundred rather than saving up for about 6 months for a turbo kit. Now that I know it's probably going to take me 6 months if I go the swap route I'll just start saving for a begi shanghai s kit. I've been reading up a lot about those kits and that'll definitely suite my needs for extra power.
