Default Hello all, Jim here with a Miata BP swapped Mazda truck.

I am 31 and have been working on mostly import vehicles since I was old enough to drive them. I currently have a 1986 Mazda B2000 with a 1999 Miata swap.

Here is my build thread over at MazdaBscene.com
MazdaBScene.com • View thread - Tuckn's official Miata swap thread.

I'm looking for more info on turbo charging my 1999 BP powered truck. I figured this would be a good place. I'm not the type of guy who asks dumb forum questions.

Here is a Youtube vid.

My plan so far is a MSM turbo, 2003 NB injectors, Voodoo box, braided lines, with 2.5 inch custom piping FMIC and 2.5 exhaust for the truck.

Torsen diff will be next I'm sure.

The MSM turbo is substandard. So it the Voodoo.

Welcome to the forum. Please post pictures of your project.

Concur.

There's no reason to go with anything from an MSM. The only parts you can use are the manifold and turbo... nothing else will fit without modification, which means you should just use better stuff to start... and the fact that you basically have unlimited room under the hood to do whatever you want, oem MSM parts are not money well spent.

Also, I don't know what the TN smog requirements are, but if going with a standalone is an option, you should do it from the get-go... in fact, it should be your first purchase along with injectors.

Since you're gonna be pushing around a lot more weight than a Miata... I'd also recommend not skimping on a clutch.

Oh yea... and nice PICS in the writeup on Bscene!

Only thing about your plan that is any good is the 2.5 inch FMIC and the Torsen.

Otherwise there are much better turbos, engine management, and injectors for the same or only slightly more money.

I say used Garret 2860, 500cc + Bosch EV14, and Megasquirt 2 from Braineack or MS Labs (Reverant on here) are much better choices. Oh and 3" exhaust

Cool truck though

Thanks guys. I have never put a turbo on anything before and I pretty much have everything already. I paid roughly 600 for all of it. Think of it as a step into boost.

Honestly what this setup will put out is plenty for a truck.

If I was building a Miata I would go with all the best stuff available.

Since my truck is an 1986 all the emissions test does is sniff the pipe.

Stand alone ecu is another mod on my bucket list.

One step at a time is my motto.

Did the voodoo box come included in that $600?

You should very seriously consider Megasquirt over the voodoo box.

MS will do everything you need/want it to do, and much much more. So much more capability than the voodoo

Sorry, double post, but props for editing your post for "punctuation"!

I have to imagine less than 1% of new users on this site would ever consider using punctuation, not alone editing a post for it...

Cheers!

Yes, 400 for MSM parts (manifold to midpipe, turbo to intake)

200 for Voodoo on ebay.

I think I paid like 16 bucks for the injectors from a pick and pull.

It is going to nickle and dime me to death with AN fittings and braided lines but it's all good.

I just want to turbo a Mazda truck. Just to be able to say I did it. Nothing special. It barely handles and barely stops with any kind of performance.

Here is my first 1990 Mazda truck.
Kia FE3 motor swap, air ride, body drop, 4x4 metal.

Second 1986 Mazda truck.
Weber Carb, new frame from firewall back, air ride.

Current 1986 Mazda.
Miata turbo was next on my list, adj. coilovers and staggered 16/18 wheels.

Default Just a few ?s

I am looking to do the same swap only on an 87. Was wondering what problems you ran into in the process. Did you use the stock truck trans? How difficult was the fuel line set up going from carburated to fuel injection. Also, motor mounts. If there's anything else I should be concerned about please feel free to let me know. Thank you.

Default Back from the dead. lol

Quick little update. Since I introduced myself I have been using instagram for all of my social media outlets. Currently running a pretty tired MSM turbo at factory boost. (8.5) Freshly rebuilt 2002 bottom end thanks to crank keyway issues on my 99 motor. Cx racing rods, 10:1 pistons, NB2 injectors and the ever dreaded DooDoo box. lol 213.8hp and 192tq is alot of fun in a reg cab truck.

Nice!

Any more pics you could put here? There's a bunch of old(er) farts on this site...i.e. Not instagrammers?

You run 93 octane right?

I'd be awfully wary of detonation with your combination of boost, small turbo, 10:1 pistons, and doodoo box.
