Default Generic Car Nut

Hello world.

I'm a 25 year old who owns a 1994 M-Edition with over 180k on the clock. I've had the car for about two years now, and have spent most of my time over at Miata.net, and lurking over here. I originally bought it as a fun to drive, economical, daily driver. I also have a 1987 Iroc-Z Camaro project that will get put together whenever I'm not sinking money into the Miata.

When I bought the car it already had Racing Beat swaybars, catback exhaust, and air intake. It has an aluminum radiator from a currently unknown manufacturer (can't read it without pulling out fans). It also has Koni yellows all the way around set on the first drop spring perch. Yes, they ride like death warmed over on horrible Tucson roads (potholes big enough to lose a wheel, for serious).

Since I bought the car I've installed a Nardi wood and leather steering wheel to match the shift **** and e-brake, and replaced the clutch and flywheel with the 10# unit from Flyin Miata and at the same time I put in poly diff bushings and Mazdacomp engine mounts. I also installed a cheap-*** JVC CD player, because cassettes are so twenty years ago (and I got a cassette adapter stuck in the stock radio ) as well as some Alpine speakers that I've had in a closet for years. I've recently acquired a color matching hard top too.

I've currently got a full drivetrain from a '99 with 100k on the clock to swap into my ride, along with full poly bushings for the NB subframes. I plan on depowering the NB rack for better feel, and for mechanical simplicity. Long term goals would probably be FI, I'm split between the sexy power numbers of turbo, with the badassery of Fast Forward's coldside MP62 (that, and they're just up the road in Coolidge). I've gotten to drive a hotside supercharger and was fairly impressed with the off-idle power. I also plan to do a lot of chassis reinforcement, as with 200k my car is quite the noisy biatch, especially with those crappy aforementioned roads.

I can't think of anything else to say.

Welcome. The roads aren't that bad here. I lived in the Detroit area for a while and those roads would swallow our cars.

That doesn't look unlike Grant Road East of Campbell, or Euclid North of University. The worst roads are in the rezzies, not the main thoroughfares, unless you live near someone in city council.

You wouldn't be the guy I ran into with the black car at QT on Alvernon, would you?

Nope. I daily an Audi and I've spent the last few months collecting parts and building a new motor. I'll probably have my motor in and running in the next week or two. It depends on if I decide to get side tracked with small details.

Yea. I'm sure one of the PO's (I'm the 4th) got that advice on M.net. I was actually planning on Koni's for my Iroc (thirdgen.org wisdom), but now after driving on some not so much (especially at $700+ for the set). Prolly just gonna go KYBs/Tokicos now. For the M I'd ideally like to get Emilio's club sport kit, but that's pretty far down the line.

I haven't had the chance to inspect one of the FFS kits in person, but from lurking on here I know you know your ****. I liked the idea of low throttled volume for better response and they also have a belt tensioner that helps prevent belt slip. Not to mention that wonderful supercharger whine. Didn't seem like a bad setup. Granted, I wouldn't run any of their electronics as I'd go MS with bigger injectors instead of the piggyback bandaid route. Then you could use the fuel bungs in their manifold for methanol. Would like to hear your opinion on it though.

they are better on other cars since they werent valved to be ****. Dont get KYBs. Illuminas or Bilsteins (Not HDs, I forget the ones to grab). sell a kidney on the black market and get xidas, a true capitalist would do this. I would.

Whine is nothing compared to whistle PSHHHHHHHH. IMO, of course.

Welcome to the site.

I have to admit I liked the whine in my Grand Prix. But PD blowers are for bigger engines that aren't as easy to turbo. I wouldn't be able to live with the lack of room for growth. I thought about it, but when people started throwing around dyno sheets like this I changed my mind.

Omfg. Need details on that graph. Is that just a good tune on a turbo, a turbo upgrade, or what?

Don't get me wrong, I love whistle PSHHHH, but down here in Tucson everybody has slapped a Volvo turbo on their claptrap. It's not as unique. But I still have a long time before I decide on FI, will get the suspension and body settled out first (not that I have too much left to go).

Yea, the Illuminas are pretty popular on thirdgen, and just about every other car website I've looked at. As a stop gap I'm probably going to go with FM's V-Maxx Coilover because I need shocks soon (these Koni's are high mileage) but the Xida's are definitely on the list when I have more $$.

Everyone knows that races are won between 2250 and 2700 rpm. This proves once and for all that superchargers are better

I'm on a log mani and a gt2560 right now but will be going to efr and tube mani once tse starts releasing downpipe/mani/turbo packages.

If you want sometime i'd be willing to give you a ride. Even though my current setup isn't efr goodness the 2560 spools very quick. I couldn't imagine having a supercharger.

I'm not too familiar with the car scene down here. All the ricers and meat heads don't quite do it for me but I've only met one other custom turbo setup that didn't look like it was living on borrowed time in Tucson.

Holy crap. These dyno graphs have just killed my desire to supercharge. Soviet, are you still using the EFR turbo on that 400 hp graph? Those are the new variable vane ones that Porsche is using on the 911's, right? Nevermind, read the file names and figured it out.

Kris, I'll take you up on that offer. Would love to feel a turbo car. Yea, the car scene down here is pretty ****. Everyone tells me I need to go to the In-n-Out on Kolb on Friday or Saturday (I forget) nights, but I really really really don't want to listen to fart mufflers for hours, or talk about what kind of raceland ebay coilovers to get for maximum slam.

There's one of these guys who I know is a "mechanic." He offered to heat up my spindles and hammer in the tie rod ends for a tighter turning radius. I told him to kindly gtf away from my car.

yeah EFR is winning. it has expensive initial cost but cheaper in the long run, at least for me. I had aspirations to drop $2k on a fully built VVT head so I can make more low-end torquezzz but frankly after spinning 4th gear I changed my mind - I really don't need any more torque.

I may still build a head but it will be purely for thrill of high revs and not for performance gains.

Soviet, nice to know that the stock '99 head I have on my engine stand engine will put out crazy power with no mods. Was thinking about having some mild bowl work and deshrouding done, nothing major, but I'd definitely send it out. I've seen some of the work from the various performance shops down here, and I wouldn't let them touch my heads. Maybe some of the old school guys on a 350, but not on anything with dual cams.
