Hey guys, I'm Cory. I live in Texas (yes, I'm typing this while holding a gun and riding an oil derrick). I work in the legal industry and I like long walks on the beach.

I have a couple of questions about the preferred forum decorum when it comes to certain types of threads. Here's my situation... I have a boosted 90 that has an old Link ECU setup that I don't care for and I am upgrading to an AEM plug-and-play plus some other sensors that are anything but plug-and-play. I will be switching to E85 and getting the car professionally tuned just as soon as I can get it put together.

I would like to do a build thread with a ton of pics so that the next unfortunate soul who attempts a similar project will have a nice walkthrough. However, I don't have all of the answers yet myself, which brings me to a fork in the road as I decide how best to balance my build threads and threads where I ask questions.

The question:

• Should I make a single thread where I post my progress/pics and where I ask questions (so that someone reading my build thread will not just see the parts I got right but also the learning process itself)?
  
  OR
  
• Should I make new threads for my individual questions and simply reference those other threads in my all encompassing build thread?

A good argument for the first option is that it will result in fewer threads and there will be one place where my entire process is captured, for better or for worse.

On the contrary, if I ask a specific question in a separate thread, or multiple specific questions in multiple specific threads, someone asking that same question in the future will be able to search for it much easier as a standalone thread rather than as a footnote in my build thread. Also, it will make my build thread a lot easier to read so an intrepid soul in the future can see a how-to rather than a lesson in trial and error.

Furthermore, I am working on a spreadsheet that consolidates all of the independent data I have found about Miata ECU harnesses. For instance, many of the popular references will describe a pin location and what it does but they won't say the wire color, while another reference will show the wire color but it won't display the pin location. My simple brain can't deal with going back and forth between multiple references, so my spreadsheet has all of this information compiled. Would that warrant its own thread or should I simply include that in my build thread as well?

I ask all of this so that I can hopefully contribute to the community in the manner that the community prefers. Also, ALL of the above is based on the assumption that I would, of course, search first before positing any question.

You left out the third (and best) thread option. Build thread littered with pictures of cats.

I'd start with the one build thread, and if it gets too far derailed onto one question, make a new thread or ask the mods to separate it into 2.

The suggestion about the cat pictures is a wise one. Always best to remember that this is, in fact, principally a kitten forum on which cars are occasionally discussed.

That said, if you're doing a build then start a build thread. If you're gather info, then use the search function, read, and post topic-specific threads as need be.

If you're doing both, then do both.

I was just joking mostly. But yes most people here run MS. But there are plenty who don't.

 

It's not that they don't take kindly, it's just that not as many use/are familiar with AEM.
