n00b, Looking to turbo; curios about n00b stuff

Hi, first post about my first car and glad it's an MX-5. Just bought my miata recently and I am hoping to turbo it eventually as well as do some more minor upgrades within the next few weeks. Off topic, buy want to know if I can I can fit 15x8 wheels, first priority is definently removing the daisys. Glad to be on miataturbo!

Andy

TorqueZombie 08-19-2014 01:51 AM

Yes. unless offset is +∞

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-19-2014 02:09 AM

offset would be 25

Braineack 08-19-2014 05:25 PM

Welcome, HeadlightsgoUP...!

sixshooter 08-19-2014 05:55 PM

+25 and +34 are doable. Less than +25 requires you to talk with a lisp.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-19-2014 06:21 PM

Thanks. I think I may have to go with 15x7s anyway because the
Dunlop Direzza DZ102s are only $68 on tirerack right now, and that's too good to pass. Just wish I could get the DZ102s in 225

sixshooter 08-20-2014 07:17 AM

205s fit on 8 inch wheels just fine.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-20-2014 05:03 PM

Wouldn't that stretch the tire a bit? definitely not a fan of stance...

Kind of, but it's actually in the name of performance/lap-times. 205 on 8" wheel is good, as is a 225 tire on 9" wheel. A 195 tire on 9" wheel is definitely stanced out, yo.

Welcome to the forum. :noob:

205s are fastest on an 8" wheel.

DZ102s are slow on everything. :giggle:

turbofan 08-20-2014 05:20 PM

...but 225's are faster on an 8" wheel than 205's on an 8", IIUC.

sixshooter 08-20-2014 05:33 PM

But if he buys a 7 in wheel he won't have any option to ever run 225s.

7 in wheels are lighter than 8s by a small margin, FWIW.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-20-2014 10:22 PM

hmm. I didn't know the DZ102s were slow.. I just wanted a cheap performance tire and at tirerack it's $68 for 195/$70 for 205. But are there any better tires I can get for relatively low money? Also I don't mind a little drifting now and again..

:bowrofl:

I'm still pretty new here, and although I had been a lurker for a couple years, you should know better than to say crap like this without proving some sort of intelligence first

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-21-2014 03:10 AM

Wow should I just go to club roadster? My feelings are hurt. :sadwavey: Not full on drifting but, you know, just getting the tail out every now and then. Ever heard of lift off over-steer? IT'S NOT AN AUTOCROSS MACHINE yet! Come on guys, how about some suggestions...

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-21-2014 03:24 AM

"you should know better than to say crap like this without proving some sort of intelligence first" eh? Well I'm sorry I'm not so 'gifted with knowledge' like you guys.. 'Tis my first car. Come on, this is a miata it won't end up in a ditch, much easier to drive than a 911 at the limit. I wouldn't exactly call myself a F1 driver, but I know what I'm doing.

No hard feelings. But take it easy though I'm only 16 :hs:

Maybe. I mean, you did just say that you want to put on crap tires so that you can slide your car into a curb. If you can suck up your durrrrifting dreams and take a little criticism, you may survive. Just don't discuss driving ever again.

Girz0r 08-21-2014 09:08 AM

Welcome to the forums!

All in all to get you 'started'. I wouldnt even worry about the turbo aspect till you have other supporting mods first.

Ecu ( please learn how to tune b4 turbo!, this forum is abundant of megasquirt knowledge )

clutch/wheels/tires/suspension/brakes... etc.

you'll be doing mad drifffs out of corners in no time.... and into curbs. :skid:

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-21-2014 10:08 AM

Hahaha. Well whatever, still no need to be such a-holes about it. Anyway, is DZ102 really that bad? or should I buy an overpriced Toyo with not enough tread. Anyway I daily this car so I want something that'll last.. NO DRIFTING! :crx:

Good question. Nobody has ever asked this before.

I'll spoon-feed a time.

205/50-15 Federal 595 RS-R. Same price. Or less. And its favorite hobby isn't drowning in hairy ballsacks.

It is unfortunate that nobody has been tough with you until this point. It's not your fault, it's just the way of the world these days.
Don't take it personally, but do listen to what you are being told here.
Don't blow the precious little money you have on shitty tires, and definitely don't mangle your car by drifting. Even if you don't end up wheels up, it's still going to tear the shit out of your drivetrain. Plus, it might make you look cool to your brofriends, but it doesn't do much for the ladies.

Strictly speaking Dorift-yo, you mean battle scarrzzz bro, BATTLE SCARRZZZZZ

To the rest of the world, this just means another drift-tard put a car into a wall/curb/telephone pole and is somehow proud of it.

Meanwhile, they are searching the JDM scene for the RB26detttttt because the more t's the more awesome the swap and will elevate them to Mega-Bro status amongst the other mentally challenged.

Every time I hear someone talking about drifting in a positive light, it reminds me of the movie Idiocracy.

Headlights, go do a ton of reading on here for a few months. It will make things much easier on you. When I speak of showing some form of intelligence, I am not saying prove you're genius, but rather your not a drift-tard

Well haha guys. If it ends up in a ditch I can laugh because that's my outlook. Not stuck up 'MX-5 purists/pricks. If it ends up in a ditch this site will be notified. Fair?

Only accompanied with pics for our entertainment. So we can say "That's why we don't DZ102"

Pics or it didn't happen

Enginerd 08-21-2014 07:25 PM

Do you have a cat by chance?

Seriously about the tires: you want the best summer street tires that you can buy. I'm not talking the most expensive tires, but search around the autocross/track forums and craigslist to see if someone's dumping a set of wheels and good street tires. To get the best experience out of a Miata (any car IMO), you want a good set of dedicated summer tires and a $3-400 set of winter beater wheels with good snow tires for the winter (if driving daily year round).

Monk 08-21-2014 07:35 PM

Purists? Based on the number of us that drive subarus, focuses, etc. probably not. Pricks? Absolutely, but we're fun.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that I was functionally retarded at 16. One day when you're around 25, you'll wake up and realize that you were too. It's all part of the male experience.
Don't take yourself too seriously, and take concealer's advice and get some decent tires. Your car can do some pretty awesome things with some good rubber under it.

sixshooter 08-21-2014 09:44 PM

I totalled a van with two girls riding with me when I was 16. I missed a curve showing off and put it in the river.

Don't try to convince me you know what you are doing. I learned to drive by watching The Dukes of Hazzard, Smokey and The Bandit, and the original Speed Racer when I was a kid. I know what I'm doing.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-22-2014 02:06 AM

Thanks guys you all give stellar advice. Especially Monk. now I realize how shitty drifting is to a vlsd/tranny. I should probably stop. Although most 16 y/o kids are functionally retarded I would have to agree that drifting probably is stupid. Know a friend who drifted his challenger into some deep shit. But yeah I guess the DZ102s are shit? Thinking of going with bfg sport COMP-2s maybe.. But i need to do more research

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-22-2014 02:14 AM

Enginerd, what do you mean cat? I have no pets. Catalytic converter? yes and stock. Unless you mean house animal in which case I say, why?

And sixshooter, I'd like to throw in a quote by Jay Leno: "You know, racecar driving's like sex, all men think they're good at it." Top Gear S13 Episode 7
Probably not true in either instances for a 16 y/o...

Monk 08-22-2014 06:53 AM

Attaboy. You're gonna be all right after all.
A lot of people like the comp-2s. It's definitely a step up over the DZ102s.
As far as the cat question goes... there isn't really a good answer to that, but it's kind of a thing here. Notice the logo.

If you're going to get not-shitty tires, then get not-shitty tires.

I posted Federal 595 RS-Rs. If you're on a budget, it doesn't get better.

Bonus points for being cheap enough to just throw away every year.

sixshooter 08-22-2014 12:22 PM

And Formula One hero Jackie Stewart said something about cornering properly being like bringing a woman to climax. A lot more men think they do than actually do.

18psi 08-22-2014 12:28 PM

In the case of MT, men to climax.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-22-2014 05:23 PM

Federal 595 RS-Rs, eh? 2 questions. 1) can I get them at tirerack and 2) is there a decent thickness of tread? but if they're that cheap I guess I could just buy same one next year, as the previous owner gave me some michelin snows and I get Nevada winters. So I'll definitely look into those

1) No

2) I don't understand the question. They aren't slicks, if that's what you're asking?

Tirerack doesn't carry Federals.

18psi 08-22-2014 06:31 PM

neither does almost anyone else.

so most of us have given up on them

New shipment hit the states over a month ago. Onlinetires has them as of a couple weeks ago.

$340 shipped to my door.

18psi 08-22-2014 06:39 PM

really? well that's not bad.

though I remember last year people taking about RS3's for like 480...so

triple88a 08-22-2014 06:55 PM

Get a nice set of 225 Rivals on an 8 or 9" rim and get on with this shit. 3rd page of the thread still talking about shitty tires.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-23-2014 04:27 AM

Think I'm planning on a tire rack tire because, obviously free mounting and balancing. but I still am considering bfg comp 2s. Are potenzas any good?

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-25-2014 01:48 AM

Hey all you drift fans, I'm ordering tires tomorrow afternoon. You all better decide on a tire. Gotta be from tire rack though. Take into account I'm poor

I'll make a suggestion though. Compare price shipped for a tire from Tirerack to the exact same setup from Discount Tire/America's tire. Last couple times I did that, Discount was cheaper.

Not a huge tire rack fan personally.

It's not free. This is why their prices are the highest.

TireRack choices:

If 205/50 - ZIIs

If 225/45 - Rivals or RS3s

If other than tirerack: 205/50 595 RS-Rs for $340 to your door. Price difference will more than pay for mounting/balancing.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-25-2014 09:59 AM

Ummm, no Tirerack is cheap for me because Ican pick up from the wharehouse just outside my city. And NO, it does not cost any more dollars
From Tirerack:
"Would you like the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 tires in your cart mounted and Hunter Road ForceŽ balanced on the Advanti Racing Storm S1 wheels at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE?"

18psi 08-25-2014 10:01 AM

I thought you were near TR, but wasn't sure.

Since you are, its a no-brainer. Go there and get them.

HeadlightsgoUP... 08-25-2014 10:01 AM

Btw those BfGs are 304 for the set. Are the Potenza's worth the money?

18psi 08-25-2014 10:06 AM

wait...
...these will be for drifting
nevermind. with any luck you'll hit a pole and go up in a flame of fire while still strapped in the car and the belt buckles get stuck.

*exits thread*

The point i was making was that TireRack's prices are often not competitive anymore.

They aren't charging you EXTRA, because their prices are higher to begin with. (Even if you pick up sometimes! Been there, done that, it's only a 3 hour drive for me, and i needed tires the next day)

See how that works?

Just order something, jesus. I don't know how many different ways we can answer this question.

Ok yeah, I'm gonna buy brand new tires just to shred them into oblivion. Right... Well anyway I'm gonna get the drift out of my system, the (chinese) Ohtsu negotiators currently on the car will possibly be used up. Right now they are practically slicks anyways. So I'm just gonna go to an abandoned parking lot and finish them, right before i put the new ones one. I'm planning on getting it out of alignment and then clutch kicking until the tranny explodes. then I'll end up in on of those parking dividers so YUP, drift into a curb. Then, as promised, pictures. Yes?
