Talking N00b from Reading, UK

So, first post eh. Hello from Reading in the UK. Greetings all

I can normally be found loitering around UK VW forums as my main car is a 1983 Mk1 Golf (Rabbit) GTI, fitted with a 2.0l 16V engine. I also have a knackered old Vauxhall Corsa, a Yamaha YZF600R Thundercat and a Honda Vision 50.

I've just picked up my first 'Miata' this weekend. It's an imported 1990 1.6 Eunos Roadster in Classic Red.

It's running a GReddy TD04H Turbo conversion, with:
- GReddy std solid intake pipes, Turbo Manifold and Downpipe, Vortech FMU.
- BIPES timing control.

It also has (Spec/makes unconfirmed):
- Water injection system.
- FMIC (Maybe RX7, pipework make unknown).
- Possibly an O2 Clamp (I think it is anyway).
- Cheap boost Gauge, Shift light etc.
- 1.8 Spec Brakes.
- 1.8 Spec Clutch.
- Torsen LSD.
- Lower Braces, Roll Hoop.

It came with a R/R trace from last year showing:
- Power peaks of 155hp @ ~ 5500rpm, running approx 5.5psi.
- Torque peak ~148 @ ~5250rpm (then tails off)
- Small flat in power and dip in Torque ~ 4000rpm

I'm new to turbos (and MX5s!). So I'll probably be asking for some help to identify some of the bits that have been added before I start changing anything. I got it for a pretty decent price as it's kinda tatty, and comes with no service history, but should be a good craic anyway!

So order of service is:

a) Wiring in a lighter socket, It's been removed and I can't charge my damn phone!
b) Identify what everything under the bay and dash is and what it's meant to do.
c) Check it's all actually working and tidy it up, the wiring is all over the shop, pretty messy.
d) Full service, not sure to what extent is required but I guess Oil/Coolant and filters as a minimum, maybe Cam and drive belts

'Apparently' I dropped my Camera on a pub crawl other week so all the pictures are slightly out of focus and the screen only half works...I'm trawling through them to pick out the usable ones and I'll get them up online over the next few days.

Umm. Is that enough for a first post?

Dave

Welcome to the site. Sounds like you'll fit in real well here. You definitely have some parts that could stand to be upgraded but it sounds like a nice start. I must warn you, if you keep hanging around here in 2 months you'll be £700 poorer and your car will be making 200hp at 12psi.

Sounds good to me!

Ok, so i'll slap a load more pictures in a different section to get going on working what the hell is what...but here's a few for the moment...

Meant to be spending this arvo painting up some bits on the Golf, better going on it rather than poncing around the net reading up on turbos...

I randomly got an email saying this thread had been post in...reminded me to come back and Say Hi again.
Everythings changed now...

Corsa - Sold.
Scooter - Sold.
MX5 - Written off (Thread her: https://www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-chat-9/rear-end-shunt-%3D-one-dead-mx-55411/)

Sadly, early last year the above the Red GReddy kitted Mk1 was written off by a Chav rear ending it at 50 odd (he was prosecuted).

I sold the wrecked car to another Mx5 owner to transfer the Turbo set up across to his and replaced it with a stupidly mint condition 1994 1.8 J-Limited 2.

I started gathering the bits to turbo the Jltd:
- Built up a MS2 DIYPNP
- Used S13 T28 Turbo
- New FM Manifold, outlet and downpipe.
- MTX-L WBO2
- Unknown WI system taken from the 1.6 above.

The intention was to install the WBO2 just before the Cat, chuck in the DIYPNP and learn it while the engine is NA and I gather other bits I need to turbo.

On the shopping list:
- FMIC
- Injectors (Likely i'll go for 550/650 EV14 unless some RX8 ones come up cheap in the meantime)
- Oil, Water and Boost/Vac lines
- Recirc BOV
- Wastegate Actuator as mine is missing
- Boost Gauge (15psi / 1 Bar range ideally)
- Plus heat sheilding, Air filter.
I think that should cover everything I need.

Annoyingly the JLimited also got rear ended and written off later last summer. This time by a stupid bint that let her foot off the brake when a Spider ran across her dashboard! So turbo plans went on hold.

I now commute by motorbike so don't really need a car, which actually is an ideal situation for cocking around with a turbo conversion....the plan is to get another MX5 when the 'right' one comes up (ideally a 94-95 1.8 Eunos) and get cracking. I'm scoping out a couple at the moment, another J-Ltd2 and a VR-Ltd.

Whoop Whoop!

Check that the wastegate is completely shut when the engine is off.

For some reason Greddy kits come adjusted with the wastegate cracked open.

If you fix this there will be a huge difference in torque from 2500-4000 RPM

P.S. I was in Reading once, in a meeting with a tech company I can't remember anymore...... (3COM? HP?)
Or maybe I had to drive through Reading.

Cheers for the suggestion...the car is dead and gone now but i'll bear it in mind.

I'm no longer in Reading btw, in Hertfordshire now and soon to move to SW London.

Oracle and Microsoft are in reading, 3com rings a bells as well...

Reigniting this crappy old thread has actually got me enthused about the whole thing again...
