Hey all -

Going to be rehabbing a 2004 Mazdaspeed (Touring edition IIRC in silver) with my father in law (Original owner), it sat for a bit and then got rats into the engine bay. As such it's been sitting a while, and we are working on cleaning it out and getting it running again. I'll posted a few pics of the start of the cleanup, and the end state is that he will sell it to me for the cost of parts and/or needed outside labor. Eventual goal is to upgrade the suspension slightly, and I am looking at the typical intake/headers/exhaust upgrades. I do have to pass emissions, but I would like to get the total up to around 190 WHP.

Couple pics of the engine bay before/after:

Cheers!

Welcome, that's a cool project! Hopefully it goes fairly easily for you with minimal wire damage. Do you have more pics of the car? Maybe start a build thread to document the restoration if you are interested, I know we'd all like to see it. MSM's have a special place in in the Miata world.

I appreciate that your goals are realistic, 190-200whp should be attainable on the MSM setup with the right supporting mods. The bilsteins that come on that car are actually pretty decent, even desirable by some, so depending on what you are planning suspension wise you might look into the DIY bilstein setup that lots of us run here.

Thanks! I do have more pics, both interior and exterior, I will do a thread in the appropriate forum.

At first glance, surprisingly few wires chewed. The plastics are all crumbly, so the overflow reservoir(s), the brake? reservoir (I don't know a ton about engines, I am learning as we go, he's a good teacher) needs replacing, belts, etc. It's been sitting in Az for around 3 years.
