Default New Dutch guy giving it a shot

Hi all,

After a 10 year break from cars (wife and kids happened, no more workshop, etc) we just moved house to a house with a workshop and I bought an MX-5. It’s a 1998 1.6 NB, standard and pretty worn-out. The body is rust free, the engine tired, suspension decent. I’ve tinkered a lot on British rust and German steel before and I am looking forward to turboing this little car. By coincidence a Garrett GT2554R came my way cheaply. I just ordered a plug-and-play Speeduino set with IAT, TPS and boost solenoid, the complete package from diy-efi in the UK. My plan is to change and tune the EFI this summer, get the car in the workshop early fall, rebuild the engine pretty much stock with forged rods, and fit the turbo and intercooling. I hope to weld my own turbo manifold, we’ll see. I’m not aiming for 3475623847593 whp, I will gradually boost it up to about 12PSI as I believe the Speeduino will not take anymore. I’m going to need a better clutch…

I’ll be reading a lot and maybe make my own log, I will probably run into problems and need your help sooner or later.
Cheers,

Hugo

Welkom!

Does Speeduino already support the 64 pin connection for the NBs? If so, might be a decent option for more people.. :-)

Well. I'm told it will fit my 1.6 NB with the exception of the alternator controller, for which I purchased a separate little gizmo. I believe 99% of all US NBs are 1.8 cars, so be carefull as those are different.

In terms of wiring, the NB 1.6 is pretty much identical to the NB 1.8
The US never got the NB with a 1.6, so you have to be a little careful with what you read on the web (often people in US assume 1.6 = always early NA).
Where do you live? I live close to Utrecht.

Hi fellow Nederlander! I pass by Utrecht daily on my commute from Doorn to Sint-Oedenrode and back, but I''ll be moving to Sint-Oedenrode, soon. Anywho, in the Netherlands everything is close. Is your car turboed already?

Cheers,

Hugo

I'm an 'Ollander too. Live in Leidsche Rijn (Utrecht).

Not turboed my car yet (kraken manifold and exhaust ordered), but got my Megasquirt running.

Where do you order? US or UK, or China / ebay? Or do we have reasonable Dutch suppliers?

Thanks,

Hugo

For the turbo manifold you can contact Kraken. He is based in the UK and shipping to the Netherlands is not super expensive.
I get most of my car parts from the UK anyway.

My car is not turbocharged yet, I first have to get it back on the road. It was super rusty and I did a complete restoration on it (front chassis rails, sills, rear arches). I work only every now and then on it, so progress is slow. I have all the turbo stuff in house though: 1.8 VVT engine, 6 speed box, 3:6:1 Torsen diff, stage 4 clutch, forged rods, EFR6258 0.64A/R turbo, EV-14 injectors, Reverant MS-3 basic ECU and finally a Kraken manifold and exhaust on order. Should be fun when ready.

Depends on what you want. If possible, from within the EU. Dutch sellers are rare. The heavier the part, the closer to home you want to get it from due to shipping costs. Where I got some parts:
Megasquirt: Greece (Reverent)
Manifold/exhaust: UK (Kraken)
Turbo: UK (second hand, Ebay)
Wideband: UK (Ebay)
36-2 trigger wheel: AU (Beavis)
Injectors: US (FlowForce)
Sway bar: UK (racing beat europe)
Coilovers: UK (Ebay)
ARP bolts: NL (Part-Box)
Delrin door bushings: Slovakia (SkidNation)
