New Guy, ready to learn, got some questions
Hey guys,
I'm Jon. I've got a pretty clean 2001 Miata LS. It has been slowly upgraded over time with FM front and rear sway bars, koni yellows and sport springs, wilwood 4 piston front and rear brakes. k&N CAI, racing beat exhaust, mishimoto aluminum radiator, happy meal clutch kit, miata roadster short shifter, hard top, lots and lots of maintenance. The car is higher mileage, nearly 170k (this is a bit of a concern, not sure if I need to worry about this). I drive 110miles every day, so did my boss who I bought the car from. He never tracked it, but I have a few times. I actually have my competition racing license and do vintage racing with VARA in a 1963 triumph spitfire. I've driven the Miata a few times with VARA and some track days at willow springs the car is a blast, it performs very well, drives and shifts smooth...…. but I do wish it had more power.
I am seriously considering doing the FM stage 1 turbo kit. Primarily because it comes with that all important CARB sticker... and their support is pretty top notch from my experience with their other products. As I understand, at 8 pounds of boost, it should be close to 200hp with their voodoo box. While this is probably enough to put a permanent grin on my face, I can never leave well enough alone and would like to get my hands dirty and learn to do some tuning and push those numbers up a bit. I'm a flight test engineer in the aerospace industry, and have a masters degree in drone stuff/unmanned systems. I am confident I can learn to tune and have started my research, but still have lots to read. I am in California, so emissions are a concern and I understand from my reading that the voodbox allows for California compliance as not being "tunable" per say and just piggybacking off the stock ECU. I would really like to get to the 220hp range as long as it remains reliable since the miata is my daily driver. I was thinking I would buy the FM stage 1 kit, keep the voodoo box for emissions testing purposes, and then add a megasquirt MS3Pro pnp to tune up to a little more boost and do the fun stuff like launch control and FFS. Again I'm brand new, so if this is a dumb idea let me know, or if there is a better way to get the FM stage 1 kit to that magic 220+hp number I'd be happy with that too.
Ill get some pictures posted soon of my miata, and my spitfire racecar for your viewing pleasure.
I really look forward to learning from you guys. Thanks for all you have already posted for us new folks to search.

Love that Spitfire. I had one back in the 70's, but I was too young and stupid at the time. So I sent something or other through the wall of the crankcase. I never did find out why. I can't even remember if I ever changed the oil on that thing. So it's always nice to see a conscientious owner using a beautiful machine in the manner that it was intended.
