Poor car really didn't want it to go out the way it did...18wheeler need say more? Still young in college 3rd year. plan to boost my mx-5 this summer. get it up around 200hp looking to do it the right way and not the cheap way. I'm in the MA area

Nice to meet you!

Howdy and welcome.

200whp will be easy, and if you do it right (start with engine management) you'll have headroom to go well beyond that for minimal extra investment. Really, once mine was at 200whp, it was safe to see 250whp with just the turn of a **** and a few datalogs.

When you say engine management I'm guessing you mean something like megasquirt?

Yes, that's my number one recommendation, and what you should do first.

I was rocking MS months before a turbo ever hit my car. I went:

MegaSquirt w/LC-1 - deleted MAF
460cc Injectors - tuned on those n/a
Then turbo and tune

Makes life easy.

In case you weren't aware, an 00 is already starting out at 9.5:1 compression so be wary of detonation.

That said, 8 psi will get you right around 200 WHP on that motor.

If you weren't already so familiar with MS, I'd suggest Adaptronic. That said, there are a couple of threads here about MS in a 99-00. There are some things that you have to do differently as opposed to the 90-97's because the ECU controls alternator, etc.

I missed the year model thing, I apologize.

I would at least look into the adaptronic.

Either way, get an ECU in there and learn how to use it before you change any hardware. When you are able to turn the boost up as high as you dare and drive away boosting happily 30min after securing the last bolt you will thank me.

what would be the safe way to ensure my engine doesn't go boom?

Learn your way around your ECU before you start boosting.

Read a few thread on AFR targets and timing.

Take it slow, running lots of datalogs and listening for knock.

The best way really is to load tune on a dyno, but only a few of us actually ever get there.

datalogs on the stock ECU? i'm guessing you mean on the new ECU? I've used MS on my old car and i know it's tricky to get use to. I had it installed for about ...32 hours before the crash. I like MS thats why i'm asking why the other ECU.

...I don't think i'm being very clear lol

Yeah, assuming the tips are after aftermarket ECU is installed.

If you're already familiar with MS the learning curve won't be as steep.

Datalogging is easy.

I'm not up to date on the ease of install or advantages of either ECU on the '00, but I believe MS was a DIY ordeal last time I checked.

What I'm thinking of doing for starters, get MS 1 V2.2 or V3 (need to do more reading) upgrade my injectors to 460cc. datalog till summer, than start N/A tuning and at the same time start looking into turbo options. oh and when i said 200Hp i meant 200 at the crank so...what 180 or so at wheels?

It's a plug and play unit, even a noob like me was able to get it running, but as I said above, if you already know MS, it probably will work well for you.

Adaptronic is $1000 vs $350-600 for MS.

When you datalog...you tune.

You run your datalog through a VE analyzer...which spits out a new, better table for you.

Rinse and repeat until it's making very small changes and drives much better.

I guess we had different definitions of datalog lol, for me it's make sure the car is running right.

"Adaptronic is $1000 vs $350-600 for MS" I saw adaptronic for around 1,500. I thinks thats a bit much for me. I'll stick with MS. I'm more use to it that and i can get a 2.2 MS from my friends shop for $140
