Default Noob from DFW area looking to learn

Hello all,

My name is Ben, I live in Fort Worth and I just got my first Miata last week. Had planned on getting a car to have fun with and work on around tax season but the perfect opportunity showed up so I jumped on it.

A bit about myself... I work in sales (I know, booooo) at a Mazda dealership and I fell in love with Mazda when I started working there two years ago. I've always enjoyed working on cars and used to own a GTI that I played with quite a bit. I do have some experience wrenching around but not fabricating but I have never turboed a N/A car before. I enjoy playing around with tech stuff and computers as well so I'm looking forward to tuning the car myself after learning a bit more.

A bit about the car... Well, it's a base model 2003 Miata, 5 speed, black. It was a one owner car and has been bone stock its entire life. I haven't done a compression test yet but that is going to be the first thing I do real soon. It needs a little TLC on the body (Two real small dents and some light scratches / paint issues) but it feels mechanically sound. Goals for it would be to get a bit past the 200 whp line for now. At the moment I feel that would satisfy me but we'll see once I get there - I'm sure you hear that all that all the time! I do have some ideas on parts for now but still deciding between a full kit or DIY. Being new to the turbo game makes me lean towards the full kit. Either way one of the first things I'll do is MS3 / MS3x so I can start learning how to tune. Budget is something I haven't decided on completely yet but I wont get cheap on this - I'm already $2,500 under budget on the vehicle itself.

I'll try not to ask stupid questions but I'm sure it's bound to happen at one point or another! I've been reading these forums since I bought the car, have gone through a few build threads and that helped a lot. I will use the search function before posting questions. I've been around forums for years and years now and I don't want to be that guy.

I'll try to get some pics tomorrow and post them.

Welcome.

What kind of sales do you do? Parts or cars?

Cars - so I get to drive all the new ones when they come out! (No I don't have more info on the new Miata than you guys do unfortunately - I typically don't know about it till they're about 6 months out)

Thank you guys for the welcome!

Thanks! Will do as soon as I get a chance. I've read a few things on there but haven't had the chance to sign up yet. I tend to lurk for a while before I join any forum.

Thanks for the welcome! I will try to post some pics as soon as I get a chance to snap a few... got out of work late and it was too dark. Maybe tomorrow.

Snapped a quick picture when I got to work this morning. It does need a little TLC on the paint and a new top (waiting it out to get a hardtop instead).

So, with my current goals (200-ish whp) I have somewhat of a plan... Starting with MS, injectors, clutch, then get the turbo going. I'm still unsure if I will go with a begi S kit (adding some stuff on the side like the intercooler) or DIY but I have time to figure it out.

As far as MS goes, I read about a few options. It seems there aren't many PNP options for my car (2003) and I've only heard good things about the two being built on miataturbo.net but I haven't seen anything about the begi option. I don't know prices on the other two units, but does anyone know if the begi unit is any good?

I tried a search and didn't find anything on it. I didn't want to start a new thread for a dumb question so I figured I would ask here.
