My name is Truls and I live all the way up in Norway!

I bought my Miata back in March 2013. It was as stock as they come, besides the leather steering wheel cover and the chrome stylebar.

Imported from Cali in 2011. Repainted at arrival in Norway. Had 60k miles on it when I bought it.

Future mods:

I`m not boosting. Am I still welcome here?

I had my first trackday a few months ago and the ball started rolling for sure. The car ran great, but I noticed a few flaws in the suspension. I have made plans for reducing body roll and to stiffen up suspension, but as I am going to be driving the car this winter, these mods will have to wait. At least until I can test and adjust the suspension on dry roads.

In other words. This winter is all about engine. Since my car is still within the 10-year "quarantine", I am facing huge fines if I am caught with more than stock power. Since the inspections are mostly visual, I have settled on ITBs, cam etc. It will be noisy, but the engine bay will remain anonymous.

I am a complete noob on engines, so I will be using this forum for what its worth. I know how to search, but I might ask some "silly" questions regarding my specific build.

Engine:

- Megasquirt
- IRTB
- Cams
- Port work and a head shave.
- New conrods

Suspension:

- New springs. Eyeballing the FM track pack
- Racingbeat sways

Chassis/Body:

- Boss Frog door bars
- Hardtop

 

Why not add a factory turbo system from a Mazdaspeed and let them think it came that way?

How do IRTBs pass the visual test?

 

The inspectors are trained to a certain degree. IRTBs are not very common and with an anonymous air box it should pass any tests. A turbo or supercharger and my registration stating 131bhp should ring a bell.

They usually control vehicles to and from events etc.. If I get dynoed, I will need to pay around 120$ per extra horsepower in taxes, but that is only under suspicion of more power.

 

For someone in Norway you certainly have quite the 'murican interior...

This is not correct at all. The only sanctions "Biltilsynet" or "Vegvesenet" can give you is to temporary take your plates and demand the car be put back to stock and inspected again.
The only way Norwegian customs can "fine" you, or more correctly let you pay the taxes for the extra power is if "Biltilsynet" approves your modifications. This will never happen as you will never be able to provide the necessary documentation.

Please do prove me wrong with real world examples...

 

I saw this happen this summer, when Vegvesnet brought out their mobile dyno and tested cars on the spot and took the plates off several cars. As for the fines afterwards, I have only heard that they were fined by the 1000NOK per HP formula.

This will be a useless discussion if you site hearsay as facts. Can you direct me to someone who states that they`ve actually had to pay a fine for tuning?

They can use their dyno to confirm tuning has been done, but they cannot use the number from that dyno for anything as it is not accepted as an accurate measurement of engine power. If they want to confirm then they will have to test the engine in a lab with controlled parameters, that will never happen...

I did not cite it as facts, only that I heard it.

I don't personally know anyone that has been fined for tuning, but for having a tuned car in an accident etc.

Tuners may or may not be caught, but at some point the law will find someone to make an example of. I am just playing this one safe.

 

I also do not believe anyone can be fined for having a tuned car in an accident, but definately for reckless driving which often is the case with that type of cars.

I`m just trying to stop the standard rumors about tuning and sanctions one might suffer from the authorities as they never seem to be backed up by anyone who actually have got said fines.

FYI, inspection according to the new checklist (2014) should give you a 2`er fault just for not having the stock airbox. Hopefully they will be lax about it as I`d rather sell my car then put it back to stock every two years.

Lassi is right. There was a courtcase 5 years ago or so here in Trondheim, when biltilsynet (dmv) bought a rollingroad and started to try to fine tuned cars. But the court determined that the same standard applied for this as for horsepower determination for road certification, and demanded that an enginebrake be used at an approved laberatory. Making the test more expensive than the fine im most cases. This is not likely to be changed.

The thing to worry about is the insurance companies, that may back charge you part or all of the paid liability after an accident. If it is deemed likely the changes had anything to do with the cause.

Op, since you're not on the turbo route & have a "Stainless China header". Have you ever thought about picking up a racing beat stainless header? I hear the gains are very noticeable (I plan on using one for my daily soon).

Well, yes. At some point I will replace the china header and also block off the EGR. But the header really impresses me. Good quality and the EGR pipe was a perfect fit. I also noticed some gains on the butt-dyno. It will be swapped once I start looking for easy HP.

These are nice! I think the lighting is what I like the most about them.
