Default Turbocharger or Supercharger?

Believe it or not, my name is Dave. I live near Pittsburgh PA and bought a black 2001 earlier this year. I have been lurking for a while and decided to finally sign up. I think that the technical knowledge that is present on this forum is pretty impressive.

I am pretty new to working on cars, mostly diagnosing problems with my wife’s TDI Jetta (2 camshafts in 100k? Really?) The most complicated job I have done myself is the water pump and timing belt in the Miata.

I have a few things I want to fix up on the Miata, and then I want to try to build my own megasquirt for it. I am an electrical engineer by trade, so soldering together my own ECU is appealing to me.

And sorry for the troll title, I thought it would be funny to use that and then just have a normal introductory post.

I don't believe your name is Dave. Sorry.

But srsly, we call this place miataturbo as a joke since most of us actually run superchargers.

A lot of us are doing a motor swap out of the Grumman Hellcat.

Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp FTW.

That's so five years ago. Cat/laser power since before it was cool.

Ignore these trolls. Everybody knows the only way to make these cars fast is a rotary swap.

Welcome! Don't be fooled Dave, this is a cat owners site disguised as a turbo Miata forum. Pics of cats are needed.

Try using a correct API CJ-4 certified HDEO DIESEL ENGINE OIL rather than the **** oil at the Quick-E-Lube and you can alleviate this problem. Be prepared to replace the cam driven high pressure diesel injection pump (if so equipped) shortly.

Welcome to the forum

Thats funny, I was always a big fan of the R-2800, mine would come from a corsair though. If I had more room under the hood, I might try a R-4360

Should have gone for the P-47, It already has a turbo. (look up the piping on that one sometime, it looks like fun)

My wife was quite religious about getting the V505.01 spec oil. She spend some time in texas before we got married and was having the dealer change the oil. I suspect they were not putting in the correct stuff, and this ate the first cam. Many VW dealers have a reputation for being idiots. There is some belief on VW forums that 30 weight oil, despite being approved in the user manual (v505.01 of course) is too thin to protect the cams. Since the second one went bad, we have only put in lubrimoly 5w-40 V505.01. We also got a aftermarket cam that has a shallower ramp, and slightly less lift. It is also hardchromed. So far so good.

Of course the Variable Geometry turbo is out of spec, and being held together with a ziptie, and I am pretty sure the EGR Cooler just died for the second time yesterday so it never ends with that car.

It is a 2006 with PD Unit Injectors, So there is no high pressure pump to fail.

And sorry no cat pictures, we dont have one(to my wife's dismay).
