Default Well it happened. New/Old Project

Well after enjoying reading this forum for many years, I now have a dusty jewel in a 1999 Miata. Years ago, I said, “When you go to sell it, let me know.” and that day arrived. While it did drive home, it’s been doing a lot of sitting. I’ve had a few cars and I’m looking forward to tinkering on this one. My neighbor bought it when it was only a few years old and it was a recipient of an early NB Flying Miata turbo kit. It has a link piggyback, and I recall helping the neighbor out by changing the intake manifold for him to go from two injectors in the pipe before the throttle body to the modified lower intake with four injectors. Then we teamed up plugging in the numbers into the Link from FM. I did get to drive it right after that, which is when I made future offer to buy it. This is a very interesting forum, been reading it for years, and often see many good ideas, and advice, even if it is not always taken. This post is to get one in so any questions that might come up that haven't been answered 50 times it won’t be my first post if I ask.

Checking the car out, the neighbor had good records of his service activities. He even blew it up 5 years ago and had a reputable shop replace the engine. I’m still checking but looks like they did a good job and it’s supposed to have been re-tuned then ( de-tuned a bit I’m told ). The final straw for him was a tire rub, but I still drove it home. Seems the shocks leaked and then the Eibachs sagged? Springs were not that old, but maybe they depend on good shocks? The tires are large, on aftermarket wheels and the front fenders look slightly rolled but the right front was rubbing on the plastic fender liner.

Planning to ‘restore’ it to former glory first, soon to follow with cooling reroute, and hopefully a MS3. Pretty amazing though that the piggy link has been running almost 20 years. One mod now before I drive it again is a wide-band to see where it sits. Been waiting a while, what’s another week of two :-)

Just two photos - some of the leaves have been removed already :-)

Just home.

Needs some cleaning.

Welcome. I thought the pic looked like FLA, and sure enough, Tampa Bay.

Hi DNM, I've been reading a lot megasquirt info and see that you provide a lot of good insight, most recently the thread on VE tables with the comments on tuning with Incorporate AFR on vs off. I don't have much tuning experience but I am looking forward to working with it soon, probably before the end of the year at my pace. I did get the wideband installed in the dash and exhaust but haven't run it yet since I'm still getting a few things ready. Pulled a couple of plugs and they looked ok. One plug looked like the gasket was letting oil down into the plug well, so I suppose a valve cover removal is in the works. I hope I can strike a balance between modding and enjoying driving, so I'm still on the basics of the car. Which reminds me, I need to see if I can determine the rear end type and ratio. hmm, back to the garage. Hot and rainy week here on the east coast of FL.
