Cannot set Base Timing to 10*
#43
So. After installing the new cam, the front two lobes seem to be in the correct position on both cams and the indicator pins on both seem to hold the gears in place nicely with no play.
However, when I set my timing according to the marks on the cam and crank gears my timing on the crank pulley/timing cover looks like this:
Its about 8* advanced according to the external markings while the internal marks are dead on (I locked it all in place while installing the timing cover.)
This is a different issue than I had before but I just don't feel like I can trust the marks as a true reference. I certainly don't want to call into question the accuracy of the marks on the SuperMiata pulley but its one of the only things I can think of. I'll be able to put it back together tomorrow and try to get it to fire again.

When at top dead center, the mark on the left (which was once yellow) should line up with the T. From your picture, it looks like the crank is actually 2-3* BTDC (should be 0).
At 10* BTDC, the left mark will line up at 10, and the right mark (which was once white) will line up with the T.

ITS ALIVE! And the timing is right on! Just gave it a little auto tune love and its handling it perfectly. I'm gonna change the oil and straiten some stuff out then take it for a nice easy spin.
Thank you all very much for your input and help. In conclusion, for future noobs. Be sure of your plug order, make sure your CAS is in the right orientation (plug sticking up) and check those Cam gear locator pins.
Now if anyone has any advice on seating new piston rings...
