Default Easy therm trouble

Ok.. now that i finally got spark working (thanks braineack for the tips and help) i got another problems i mentioned in my other thread..

I'm trying to use easytherm to use the stock clt sensor and the gm IAT sensor for now until i get around to installing my gm clt sensor.. anyways ive been using these directions:

2) GM IAT and Mazda CLT

i) Once the laptop is connected to the ECU open EasyTherm
ii) Change the 'Code Version' (towards the bottom on the RHS of the screen) to "Custom"
iii) Change the port to your port (COM 1 or what-ever it is) on the bottom of the screen
iv) Change the 'Coolant Temp' settings to your desired settings ***(see below for the settings most people use)
v) Once you have changed the settings, click on the "Write .inc and .s19 Files" button on the bottom of the EasyTherm screen
vi) The file that you want to write to is the 'msns-extra.s19' file in the "EFI" folder in the MSnSE file that you unzipped to earlier.
vii) Then click on the "Download to Megasquirt" button on the bottom of the EasyTherm screen. This will open the file that you wrote to before, BUT it will default to the 'msns-extra.s19' file. You NEED to download the 'msns-extra.s19_mod' file. Don't do the other file!!!!
viii) Follow the instructions in EasyTherm to do the download BUT you don't] need to install the Boot Jumper.
ix) Once this has finished you will need to copy the "airdenfactor.inc", the "matfactor.inc" and the "thermfactor.inc" files from Program Files > EasyTherm into Program Files > Megasquirt > MegaTune2.25 > mtCfg
x) Then once that is all done, open MegaTune, check that the commuincations is going through the same COM port as before, and if you see the guages in MegaTune giving some readings you can now download your .msq onto the ECU and you're good to go.

with these values:

I have found these figures to give a 'low' temp reading so I changed them a little to

-4F 16200
86F 2450
176F 384

however on step vii when im supposed to download to megasquirt, when i go to select the correct COM port on easy therm, it only lets me select COM1-4, when i need to use COM5, and when i manually enter COM5 in the window, it says error.. any ideas?

I usually just use easytherm to create the updated .s19 and then load it via the download-firmware.bat file, or hyperterminal, or whatever your favorite firmware loading tool is.

To use download-firmware.bat you'll need to rename the .s19 to the msns-extra.s19 (and delete or rename the old one so you can do this...) then run the batch file and away you go.

Alot of software doesn't like to use COM ports above 4... sometimes even if they're listed they don't work properly. MegaTune seems to do fine as far as I know, I've used up to COM7 or 8. Easytherm locks you to 1-4.

How necessary is it to run easytherm? I've been told if you're using the gm ait and mazda clt you can run w/o it. The difference in readings is pretty small.

I can't get my car to run on MS so don't listen to me, just wondering what other peoples opinions are. If you're using a gm ait and mazda clt is it necessary to run easytherm?

The car will still run without running easytherm and the stock sensor. Your CLT will be about 20° cooler than it actually is.

That's pretty true if you're using a GM IAT... the CLT is far less important for daily use as it's main purpose is warmup enrichment and warmup idle speed.

It is nice to have the CLT accurate for datalogging and tuning purposes... I like to be able to trust the reading.

The IAT on the other hand.... very important. It must read correctly or your fueling calcs will be off. But as you mentioned, if you use the GM IAT that's a non-issue.

Sam,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I was helping friends move and couldn't get to a computer. I read your other thread, glad to hear you got it figured out. I agree with the others on ET. I had a hard time with it as well and ran without it (with no adverse effects), but eventually as I fine tuned everything better I wanted to know that MS had the right temp info so that's why I tee'd into my heater hoses and used the GM CLT.

Dont worry about it man.. I figured you were just busy.. it was a silly mistake on my part reading the wrong instructions, after that it fired right up.. about the CLT sensor, i have the GM one sitting right here beside me i just havent had a chance to put together a "T" and put it in yet

I'm just about ready to install the turbo.. I just gotta wait and get a WB sensor cuz im thinkin it would be a good idea to wait until i get that to install it
