Default megasquirt advice for new turbo install

Hi,

I have installed a 1.8 1994 engine in my 1991 1.6 eunos. I wish to install ms1 to run the turbo set up I am installing.

I have a few questions.

1. The 1.8 has one less temperature sensor so where do i take the coolant temperature for the fan? Do I simply re install the temp sensor in the thermostat? I have re routed the coolant system and it will not go in its stock position anymore due to clearance issues.

2. I have decided to keep the 1.8 throttle body and so have altered the connectors to suit and wired the tps and IAC in. I can only find settings for the 90-93 IAC valve are these ok for my 94?

3. Should I go standalone as only have the 1.6 ecu and don't know if this will run the 1.8 IAC ? I have removed the A/C so am I right in thinking this is my best route? I do still have the PS.

Still new to all this so any help greatly appreciated.

If you've put a plate in the front of the engine where the thermostat housing used to go, you can install the sensor there.

Or, you could put the fan under ECU control.

Try this as a start:

These settings are from the MSPnP for the '94, so you'll probably need to raise min and closed a bit (keep them the same as one another) and play with cranking (seems low to me) but the frequency should be good.

I think I answered this above. If not, I need more detail as to the nature of the question.

Remember the tps will not work with megasquirt unless you have an automatic miata or have put in a variable tps from another car. Search variable tps.

So are you saying the 4 wire TPS that came with the 1.8 is no good?

I'd seen this in the "SUPER Important Megasquirt" thread so I thought it would work?

Under the hood, cut the 3 pin connector off of the vehicles harness.

For a '94-'97 TPS, assuming you have a pigtail for the new 4-wire TPS, splice the red / black wire of the TPS to the red wire of the car's harness. Splice the green / white wire of the TPS to the green / white wire of the car's harness. Splice the black / blue wire of the TPS to the black / green wire of the car's harness. The red wire of the TPS will be unused.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Also regarding the temperature sensor for the fan control. My reroute was acheived by swaping the 1.8 thermostat housing from the front to the back of the engine and repiping to suit. So now at the front I have the take off for my heater matrix.

I could put the old 1.6 thermostat on the front that would take the stock temperature sensor and then get the outlet reduced down to take 5/8" heater hose.

Any thoughts? Or should I do as suggested and let the ms control the fan?

On a side note is " tea, earl grey, hot" Jean luc Pickard?

So is this right that the 1.8 tps won't work with my ms1 in a 1990-93 car?

The whole thermostat? Or just the housing?

You could go any number of ways here. The simplest would be simply to take a piece of flat aluminum plate about 3/8" thick, cut it to fit over the hole in the front of the head, and drill and tap a hole in it for the sensor. I'm sure that a certain amount of RTV will be necessary to ensure a leak-free seal with no gasket.

Or, just put the lower half of the stock thermostat housing up front, with a metal plate, and use the stock gaskets.

Don't relocate the heater take-off to the front. If you do this, you'll have no circulation in the aft section of the head when the thermostat is closed.

It is.

It is also what I happen to be drinking just at the moment.

It will work fine. You just need to get the right connector (it's different from the one on your 1.6 harness) and set up the MS appropriately.

Thanks for the Patrick Stewart pic, as a side note he's Chancellor of our local university. My wife received her degree from him.

Ok back to the car. I have the 4 wire pig tail for the 1.8 TPS do I run all four wires to my self build MS1 or do the alterations suggested in the previously mentioned sticky as my car is a 1991?

Thanks for the reroute advice too. I'll look into that. I think I'll need the spacer making for the heater takoff from the back off the head.

Fitting a 1.8 into my 91 also, I am swapping the 'stat housing from the 1.6 to the 1.8 to sort the sensor issue out. Don't wave the TPS issue you have as mine is an auto and already has the variable tps, fairly easy for me as the wiring is already there.

Joe if I was to take the heater take off from the front of the engine you say there would be no circulation in the rear of the engine when the thermostat is closed? I thought there would be some as there is a feed to the oil cooler and tb from the rear of the engine before the thermostat?

I only ask as this reroute is featured on a video on utube by "the king of miatas"?

Thanks

1k resistor needed for standalone and cops (between y/b and b in cop harness)? Is this right?

I'm not sure, it's been a while since I did mine but here's Braineak's write up including the original discussion thread for quick reference.

1k fitted and I now have a working tach.

Car starts fine from cold but won't start hot? I have to leave it overnight? Also my fans are still on all the time.

More work needed.
