Default jumpstart/ smoking MS3X

Well had a dead battery today and tried to jump start the car after it sitting for a couple months. Looked over and my carpet is smoking where the MS3X sits. Turned off the car and pulled carpet back and my ms3x has some smoke pouring out of it. Pictures of carnage to come.

Diode at position D9 looks fried for sure.

Capacitor at C16 was completely fried and was definitely what I saw smoking. C17 is in bad shape to. Guess I need to look into getting some new capacitors.

I am thinking about trying to repair this myself any pointers as I have only done very minor amounts of soldering. Also is it ok to clean the board of with alcohol and a qtip or should I use something else. There is quiet a bit of soot on the board as you can see.

I was wondering why jump starting caused this problem. I am sure there is a simple and logical explanation. If anybody has any ideas let me know. I just want to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Any input or help is greatly appreciated. Monday I will bring home my loupes and light and take a closer at the board to make sure I am not missing any other obvious damage.

$100 says you jumped it backwards. There is no other plausible explanation.

Well i wasn't in a rush and wouldn't think I jumped it backwards. However, anything is possible. Guess I will write this down as a stupid tax and will head to radioshack today. This will be my first time soldering electronics.

This is a lucas service part, but it may be compatible with the MS3.
