Default Transistors

Im after 4 transistors to finish my build. These are for my fan control, boost control and to do joes spark out mod.

Normally id just source them from a MS supplier but there arn't many in the uk and its not cost effective to ship across the pond. We have a shop called maplins (similar to radioshack) to buy comonents however they didn't have the parts used in the modkits and im not au fait with components so im looking for similar specced transistors. Below is a link to my options,

NPN transistor from Maplin Electronics

For some reason the 2N3904 is standing out to me as being okay for fans and joes circuit but will they be okay with boost control? If not could you please advise?

Whilst on topic I also need a boost solenoid can anyone advise/recommend one thats available in the uk or could be found in a uk scrap/junk yard?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

They're what I use for everything, a plasticcase is neater on the proto area mind...

The 2N3904 is fine as a relay driver where the current is low, but for applications where you're directly driving a solenoid (such as IAC and EBC) you need a larger transistor with a higher current rating.

For some reason, they usually specify an NPN BJT (TIP120) for IAC, but an N-channel MOSFET (IRLZ44) for EBC. Not sure why there's no uniform standard here. But since the IRLZ44 is where all the EBC experience is, that'd be the part to go with. Maplan doesn't have those, but they do have the IRF540, which looks to me to be close enough spec-wise that it'd probably work fine.

If you have a fry's in your area, you might want to check that place out too for the IRLZ44 transistor. NTE electronics, a brand of components that fry's stocks, has a cross referenced part for the IRLZ44 transistor, part # NTE2986. Fry's has a bigger selection of electrical components than radioshack. IIRC, radioshack does have a IRF510, but I'm not sure the specs would work on it, you would have to ask Joe.

EDIT: just realized you live in the UK. Whoops. Maybe info for other people who don't want to order from DIY for parts that would normally cost a few bucks.

They didn't have any 2N3904's in stock so i got the more expensive 2N2222A's instead and a IRF540A. Hopefully this will be okay

Cheers guys,

Rob

Crap sorry Rob I thought you were on about the 2N2222a's

Them's the ones I use, though I've never paid 1.24 for them!
