Default trouble setting base timing DIYPNP

Ok, so here's my setup: 93 Miata, with 99 engine currently running all 1.6 electronics and ecu. Runs like a dream.

I've decided to go standalone in preparation for an upcoming vvt swap and want to run the new ecu on the 99 motor first to make sure it's all good.

I plugged the ecu in for the first time today, after wiring up the 99 throttle body and I cannot get the observed timing to match with the requested timing in tuner studio (set to fixed at 10 deg of course) no matter how much I adjust the crank angle or mess with the CAS. If I adjust the CAS enough to get close to 10 (with the offset set to 20) it will barely run.

The car will idle smoothly, but the observed timing is way off the scale. My guess is that it has something to do with my ignition settings, but I matched up my settings with a couple of setup guides I found and it all seems OK. I'm using the 1.6 coils and stock CAS for now.

I've done the tps and clt calibrations, and I loaded a map from someone with a stock 2000 miata (changing the ignition settings) found here:

https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...t-67115/page2/

I also tried loading the 90-93 base map from diyautotune, with no luck.

I'm completely new to ecu tuning, so I'm hoping I'm missing something stupid. I've been doing a lot of reading the past week and thought I had a handle on everything, but now I'm stuck.

I put the 1.6 TB back on and plugged the stock ecu back in for now. Hopefully one of you guys can help me out, but in the meantime I'll continue to do some research.

I think some of the NBs had a different spark trigger setting than the NAs. The NAs used a 4g63 setting and the NBs used something different. Just throwing it out there.

Yes, there is a specific setting for 99+ miatas but I am still using the 4g63 style from my original 1.6. One other thing was that on the 9093 base map the car would idle, then slowly rev up to about 2k before I shut it off.

Well, The car is running great now. I changed my spark settings from "going low" to "going high" (which is what I thought I started with), and the timing was spot on. only needed a couple degrees of offset. Car seems to be running strong, maybe even a little stronger than before with the current tune, with no noticeable pinging. I filled up with 93 just to be sure. Now to start reading and learn how to tune! I know there weren't many responses to this particular thread, but I would like to thank all of you for the wealth of information found on this forum. I couldn't have gotten this done without you guys!
