Default Tunerstudio or VEAL - Killing my MS?

Wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Running Tunerstudio on OSX Maverics and a USB to serial adapter, MSPNP2. So far, while running VEAL the car has leaned out and died 4 times, 3 of which were on the freeway running 90mph in traffic, which was a whole lot of fun. When this happens, TS goes offline, sometimes the MAC locks up, and the car starts right back up after I cycle the key (resetting the MS) and unplugging the USB cable. Restarting without recycling the MS results in no a no start and some backfiring.

I took a 150 mile road trip and the first 3 times it happened were within the first 30 miles. I unplugged the laptop from the MS after the 3rd time since I could not find a problem, and the issue never happened again during the trip. This morning it happened once more running VEAL and I just unplugged the USB, shifted into neutral, cycled the key and it fired back up.

There are no weird values getting plugged into the VE table, and it has NEVER happened when I am not running VEAL, so I am thinking this is some software bug or incompatibility with my USB/Serial adapter, and not a MS, tune, or wiring issue. TS is doing something to freak the MS out.

My guess would be the cable setup, but that's just a guess

The two chipsets used in these adapters I know of are Prolific and FTDI. I just had stability issues with an Prolific adapter in OS X fwiw. FTDI has been rock solid for me on OS X, Win and linux.

My ms2 occasionally loses sync and restarts but usually doesn't require any intervention, almost like the lost sync you get when burning except it knocks tunerstudio offline.

Only happens occasionally when I'm data logging or vealing, not any other time. Prolific adapter and windows 7 though.

Modifying one of these is pretty simple if you have halfway decent soldering skills. So nice not to have to mess with cables, the serial->USB things always gave me trouble.

Also, I was tuning one day on my surface and picked it up one handed. Slid my VE table completely to zero. The whole table. Don't know how I did it. But it stopped HARD in the middle of traffic. sadface.

OUCH... I was doing 90 in traffic in the left lane. It was fun getting over. Almost had to get out and push.

TS is a little weird on OSX. It was rock solid for me on Ubuntu. I found out the founder was a raving liberal, and I just could not look at it the same anymore.

Definitely going to look into the bluetooth stuff. I'm wanting to build a phablet/tablet insturment cluster anyway, after I do the 50 other things I'll never get around to.

I run windows and the usb adapter that diy autotune sold and it worked, never had any trouble. Now run windows with usb cable to MS3 and also no problems.

The adapter we sell and the chipset in the MS3 are FTDI. FTDI works well, never had an issue with a legit one.

Prolific has been very hit and miss. Problems seem to compound over time. IE, they'll work for a tuning session, or even for a few days, but over weeks and months problems creep up. I would stay away from Prolific.

I have problems with TS not closing correctly and such in OS X. I think it is more of Java issues more then a TS issue.

I can vouch for all the above OSX-related problems. So far the worst I've had experienced is for it to lose signal and you have to go to the "communication" tab again to detect the port.
