Sam, I really DON'T want to do it, but if you can find the ACT distributor for my area and send me the contact info, I can sign up as a dealer. But keep it as a last option please, if the other guys don't play ball.

UPDATE: I've made a deal with CarolinaClutch that works out better for us than PSO... plus, Tom at CC was a pleasure to deal with.

It appears that with the new forum upgrade, only Moderators can update posts more than a day old... so I'm gonna rely on a few key Mods to update this thread over the next few days and keep the first 2 posts on the 1st page up to date.

Tom is still working out what he can do for us on flywheels, but they will be available at a discount. All models of ACT clutch will be available... but Tom is doing some homework on ACT's availability as he's noted due to recent demand ACT is has backordered some models from the factory.

TOMORROW MORNING, I PROMISE, WILL BE THE FINAL PRICES/DEAL UPDATED IN THE FIRST POST. Shipping will be free.

Based on that, I absolutely need 10 people to sign up as DEFINITE before anybody can order anything... and those 10 people need to order pretty much immediately... like tomorrow or Saturday. BUT WAIT UNTIL I GIVE THE GO-AHEAD!!! Latch makes the 6 definite, but I think we can find another 4 on-the-fence types to commit pretty quick. The deal will go for several weeks so others can get in on the deal... but the first 10 guys will make the buy "happen".

Thanks for all the patience!!!

In - one of the 1.6 clutches. Will my wife notice the XT? My stock clutch is still going strong with a ton of hard launches on it but it would be nice to not have to worry about it. Someone just decide for me. Thank you, samnavy, for helping us all out.

Ben 01-03-2008 05:47 PM

rj, mine can't even handle the hd.

guys, if you're turbo and over 200whp, please consider going with the larger 1.8 stuff. surface area = good

rotaryjunky 01-03-2008 05:51 PM

Its about time I found her a miata anyways.

1.6 XT

For those of you trying to decide which one... there are A LOT of threads specifically on which ACT models suit which power levels and driving styles. There are only 2 pressure plates that would apply to our applications... the HD and XT for both the 1.6 and 1.8. And then there are 6 discs that you can mix in.

If you're making ridiculous power, like 350+, then you probably want to do some serious homework on your own and match a clutch to your exact driving habits and needs.

But for most of us, running between 150-250whp, the choice can get a little more complicated.

The general feeling is that the HD pressure plate feels just a little stiffer than stock. The stock Miata clutch is fairly light... and stepping up to the HD basically feels like what you'd expect to find on an average V6. The XT on the other hand is a big step-up in stiffness. I've heard it described as roughly twice stock pedal effort... essentially what you'd expect to find in an average aftermarket V8 clutch. Stop-and-go traffic with an XT might get a little old after awhile, but is still very doable... and after a week or so, most guys say they're totally used to it and going back to a stock clutch just doesn't feel "right" anymore.

If you're a small guy with puny bird-legs, maybe the XT isn't for you.

As for discs, here's where it gets tricky. The ACT website does a good job of describing what to expect between the different discs. The 4-pucks will be a true on/off switch... with the 6-pucks being a little more liveable, but definitely something you're willing to make a sacrifice in power handling vs. driveability for over the solid discs. Just be sure to do your homework and make a good choice.

Flywheels, you're on your own:
http://www.advancedclutch.com/produc...flywheels.aspx

Either Miata engine size can use the clutch setup from the other size. 1.6 and 1.8's can use each others clutches as long as you use the flywheel for that clutch. The total weight of the rotating clutch/flywheel assembly is a little lighter for the 1.6 as 1.8. The numbers are out there somewhere... and it's only a small difference.

The advantage is that someone running a 240whp 1.8 can opt for 1.6XT setup... as the 1.8HD setup probably won't be enough... and the 1.6XT is a lot cheaper than the 1.8XT.

Similarly, somebody running a 200whp 1.6 might feel he needs more than the 1.6HD, but doesn't want to step up to the 1.6XT pressure plate. The easy solution is a 1.8 HD to keep the pedal effort and cost down.

The above examples would assume the solid discs, and not any of the puck models.

The decision on what model clutch is something you should put some thought into... but don't lose any sleep over it. As long as you're not severely underrating the clutch, you're gonna be happy with an ACT.

But no more discussion about this in this thread... start another thread if you're looking for help making a choice.

i'll be in on something. I just have to figure out which one is appropriate for me.

Loki047 01-04-2008 03:31 PM

Loki is on the fence, or wants to buy in a few weeks after the Initial 10

rotaryjunky 01-04-2008 04:19 PM

I won't be back in the US until Tuesday, so It would be very hard for me to order before then. I might be able to get online tomorrow if I can order online.

Braineack 01-04-2008 04:24 PM

bump, read first post again.

fourwhls 01-04-2008 04:36 PM

Am I seeing things or did the prices at CC go up in the last few days?

I thought it was going to bein the $310 range for a ZM1-XTMM shipped, and now its $320. It's only $10 and still a killer deal.

Maybe I was imagining things.

orion4096 01-04-2008 04:54 PM

I would give everyone on the definite list the chance to change their mind first seeing as some of us were definite for what was a lower price. For example, I originally saw $405 for the 1.8 XTSS, but now it looks like it'll be $427. With the PSO non GB price of $451 I'll probably still be in, but I need to think about it a little first and make sure I can't get an equal or better price somewhere else on my own.

johndoe 01-04-2008 05:14 PM

maybe i'm blind but is there no difference in price between 1.6 and 1.8 XT kits? I thought there would be based on the above post.

orion4096 01-04-2008 05:35 PM

Maybe you're looking at the XTSS instead of the XTMM? The XTMM (1.6 XT) is cheaper than the XTSS (1.8 XT) from what I've seen on the site.
