Actually these are superior to the new HKS gears. Jun used to do the same and Toda as well if I remember correctly.

The new HKS cam gears have a wonderfully exciting tendency to slip due to the three bolt design (in general, I don't know if they have the same design on the Miata but they do on all the other applications that I have used). And the outer portion of the gear, the part that contacts the inner surface of the belt, being aluminum as opposed to steel wears quite often. The anodizing will usually go in a matter of days...

Yes, they'll tell you that, but Toda has a vested interested in selling you extra stuff.

RS Aizawa, who sold me these cams said that the 2nd Gen HLAs are sufficient.

Everyone used to do this, I guess because billet gears are more sexy and that they would have to buy the parts from the OEM supplier, it gave them less flexibility, they went the way they did.
