MIATAROADSTER 3.3:1 RING AND PINION GROUP BUY

It's an interesting situation, but I completely understand where Bill is coming from. I bet it took a lot of guts to write that email.
Still, though...day dreaming of a big turbo, 6spd 3.3 blast down Highway1. I'll probably stay in it. I have some guitars I need to sell, anyway.

After looking at the gearing calculator again, it's still what i want for my car. So i'm staying in.
I have a feeling i can get them installed for only a couple hundred bucks. I hope with people backing out that the price won't get much above $750. I know i'm paying for a custom part at this point, but there is a limit.
I also have a lot more faith in US manufactures. Though time will tell.
The worst part is the wait. Bill said 4 months from when he places the order. I'm not sure if that's 4 months until he gets some gears to test, or 4 months until the testing will be complete and we get sent some. Hell, they could show up before my tecna coilovers.

I cant imagine having them in my hands until April or May anyways. If any earlier than that I would be happily surprised.

So i had a brief talk with my "my guy" from besnik engine design (the guy who built my engine) about Cryogenic treating. I was a little curious as in the recent email it stated that Cryogenic treating was at -150F.
I got this information, i'll just quote:
The email didn't say anything about re tempering afterwords either.
Obviously i asked how much his -300F treatment would cost. He said it depends, because liquid nitrogen is expensive he likes to utilize as much of it as possible. If i were to just do my parts and needed them right away it could cost me up to $140. He likes to combine parts and do multiples at a time which if i waited i could spend as little as $60.
Hell, if everyone got their gears cryo treated he could do a batch run with quick turn around for very minimal price. He also noted that retreating them to -300 wouldn't hurt the finish at all after already being "sub cryo" treated.

Well, that process is referred to as "sub cryogenic" treatment, and honestly just about anyone with half a brain can do it with dry ice and some alcohol. It does offer some enhancements to the metal, however it will not reach to the core like -300 will. Basically it will treat the surface and penetrate a minimal amount, but that is the extent. There are a few phenomenons that occur at -300, which sub cryo cannot duplicate. It is also important to note the sub cryo will loose its properties if the part is machined again. With deep cryo, it is a one time treatment, that's to the core, and will last the life of the part.

Bill,
While this is taking a long time, I would like to say a word of thanks for rejecting substandard products, rather than shipping them out to us, your customers. I hope you will keep us updated as often as you can of whatever developments occur.

update
Thanks for the kind words.
Many people asked for refunds when the price went up for the US-made parts and I'm now awaiting a re-quote from the manufacturer.
Thanks for your patience!

I'm in. I really need them. Even $1000 is cheaper than a tranny swap or rear end swap. Hope we can get to 40, cuz it sounds like it won't even happen if not since it will be below the 25 count as well.

The first 5 gears will be very similar to what I had with a 5-speed and a 3.909 rear end. I found that to be a great set of ratios with 250 hp. That all worked great until I turned the boost up to 300 hp and started grenading 5-speeds. I think that 6th gear will be mostly a gear suitable for cruising on level ground.

I just wish things would either fall through or hurry up and get done already. I'm almost to the point where I could use the money and get other things for the coming season.

I talked to Bill today about a different purchase, but asked about the gears. Hopefully we will know a final price next week.
