Suit buying 101.

Fire ratings…SFI1,5,FIA??? Fire doesn’t care if you’re at a track day, a race or a autocross. Most of the time fires happen during testing. In a fire you want a suit to protect you from an open flame. This allows you time to exit a vehicle. It takes roughly 8 seconds to stop and exit a vehicle that traveling at 100 mph. it takes longer if the brakes started the fire. That’s where fire suits start.
SFI3.2a/1 is more commonly called Single Layer suits. These suits are rated by the SFI to allow 2 seconds of fire protection. These suits are a cotton soaked in a fire retardant material. That FRM will wash out. So I do recommend replacing these suits after every 5 washes. They should also be used with a sfi 3.3 rated under garment.
SFI3.2a/5 are rated for 10 seconds of protection. These suits are made from Nomex, hocotex, or carbon-X. the fire protection will not wash out. Undergarments are recommended but not required by many racing organization.
FIA is an international rating. A rating system accepted by racing originations globally. The requirements are similar to a SFI3.2a/5 suit, but not exactly the same. Some suits will be FIA rated and not SFI rated. Unlike SFI there are no levels of FIA ratings. A suit is either FIA rated, or it’s not. Again it is recommended to use a fire rated undergarment, but many organizations do not require it
