I wasn't saying my car was faster, just that it made more power

srtwizzy 10-03-2010 12:18 PM

Trust my I hope i can run down srt's and evo's in my miata. =) That will piss some people off haha.

srtwizzy 10-03-2010 01:05 PM

Quick question guy's. What should i do about an intake? Can i just run a filter off of the turbo?

kotomile 10-03-2010 01:11 PM

Mmm, depends on the turbo. With an aftermarket EMS you can ditch the AFM, if that's what you're asking. Whether or not you can then just bolt a filter to the turbo depends on whether you're going to plumb the valvecover back into the intake and/or whether or not clamping the filter straight onto the turbo is going to make the filter too hot from the nearby exhaust manifold.

Most people run enough pipe to get the filter a little bit away from the manifold and leave it at that. Mine's just a simple 90* bend.

srtwizzy 10-03-2010 01:28 PM

Hmm, what do you suggest? I have a 16g turbo.

kotomile 10-03-2010 01:34 PM

Just look at the turbo as it sits, on the manifold in your engine bay, and figure out the path of least resistance to get the filter a bit away from the exhaust manifold. For a top mount mani, you can usually just use a macaroni pipe and put the filter behind the headlight. For a bottom mount, you can do that too, or some put the filter lower and out of the engine bay for cooler air. Up to you.

What sort of manifold do you have?

Or post pics. That could potentially help.

FYI here is a pic of my intake pipe laying on my strut tower. https://www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-chat-9/6-dollars-lower-your-mat-temp-20-degrees-49007/

Included is plans for a cheap to free cool air box. Your welcome.

I do. Like it was it was mentioned already you need to get rid of the AFM first.

Totally would have but I have no access to photobucket or facebook, where I usually link my photos from.

EDIT - But I have this one uploaded in the old member gallery, it shows the intake well enough.

srtwizzy 10-06-2010 10:36 PM

Okay guys I think I have just about everything that I need for the turbo for the time being. I have: (16g turbo, manifold, 2.5 in. DP, AFPR)-$500.(Forums) (lc1 wideband, boost gauge, 255 Walbro fuel pump install kit, NGK iridium plugs gapped to .035, NGK wires)$300(begi and jsc speed) (2 front mounts with piping and turbo xs BOV, HKS turbo timer, 255 walbro fuel pump)-$200(local guy)

So I accomplished my goal of a DIY turbo kit for right at $1000!! =). Yes I know I am Missing a big piece. MEGASQUIRT!! Unfortunately I dont have the money for one at the time, but one is in my future very soon. I still need to research it a little more as well, still not understanding it 100%, other than the fact that i hear its AWESOME!. Other than everything I listed plus the megasquirt, is there anything else you guys think i should get before install?

Also what is a safe amount of boost to run wit stock ecu? 5-6psi? I wont be beating on it. It will only be stock ecu until I can afford a MS.

Lastly, should i use full synthetic 5w-30 oil now that i will be boosted? I currently have 135k miles.

I just want to thank everyone for all the help, and of course all the harassment haha, without any of that I wouldn't have searched myself as much as I did.

srtwizzy 10-06-2010 10:37 PM

Oh yeah, I am hoping to install by the end of this month. Taking a weekend off and a buddy of mine and I are gonna go at it, so hopefully we don run into any problems.

SKMetalworks 10-06-2010 11:18 PM

Fuel pump and turbo timer was a waste of money. Coulda saved that money for megasquirt.

srtwizzy 10-06-2010 11:27 PM

They came with the intercoolers. I wouldnt have bought those from a website for $100 a piece. I'm hoping within he next 2 paychecks i can order a megasquirt. Does everything else sound good so far for install though?

miatacross 10-06-2010 11:59 PM

I wouldn't install the kit with the stock injector and no extra management dude. You're going to run big ass injectors on a stock ecu that was programmed for a lot less, bring in a lot more air without making your car actually compensate for the extra air any smart way...

Either way, what you're doing is rushing your project and that will NOT turn out good!

Don't run the big fuel system on the stock ecu, it won't work and you'll probably blow your shit up.

Save up for the MS, or somehow obtain a piggyback of some sort.

kotomile 10-07-2010 12:22 AM

Trixxx - It's a bowser actually, I like it.

OP - You could have skipped the 255 and the fancy-pants plugs. Next time get NGK BKR7E. Fuel pump wise, on an AFPR setup, you want a "HP" pump, like the 190HP. It's meant for high pressure, hence the "HP". Once you go MS and ditch the AFPR, it'll behave like a stock pump.

Miatacross mentioned you running big injectors on the stock ECU. I read your post and didn't see mention of this, but if you are thinking about doing that, don't. If you go too much bigger than stock on the stock computer you won't idle or even get the car to start.

srtwizzy 10-07-2010 08:16 AM

My bad guys i left out the injectors. I have some 305cc's

srtwizzy 10-07-2010 10:59 AM

So if I am understanding any of this. I should not install the fuel pump on a stock ecu at all. But what is my best bet for putting everything else on? put the bigger injectors on? with turbo? or leave stock injectors on?..

IF I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO HAVE A MS to run this setup safely.. I can always order one..I just dont want to spend $700 on one.

srtwizzy 10-07-2010 11:02 AM

However, wouldn't I have to get even bigger injectors for the MS, and would the fuel pump be okay to install once I have a MS?
