So a friend of mine has a upgraded greddy kit on his 92 miata. RC 370 injectors, flyin miata fuel rail, Begi downpipe (divorced gas), front mount intercooler, AEM EMS standalone, Gizzmo Intelligent Boost Controller, GM 3 bar, GM intake temp, MAF Delete, etc. So he was complaining about pinging in his car since the boost was turned up. I took it for a drive and noticed when up in boost, at a high rev, the pinging noise starts and the oil pressure starts to fluctuate madly. My guess is that the huge *** stock greddy oil return is filling with oil and not returning quick enough, and the head is becoming oil starved. There's absolutely no detonation going on. Has anyone heard of this issue before? I'm thinking it's just time to tap the pan and do a proper return.

 

i've heard that the oil pressure sender can act like a knock sensor in that it does exactly what you are describing during knock.

 

+1 I don't think it is an oil problem; but the oil pressure sender is indicating a knock problem. Get thee to a wideband and check the timing.

Well I was pulling the spark plugs and the burn looked clean!

Damnit!

 

Had to take out about 4 degrees of timing in about 6 cells up top. Car went from 208 RWHP to 217, and it's not pinging anymore. It's pretty awesome.
