IT RUNS! I don't know why but I expected it not to start. It turned right over. I did prime the turbo by unplugging the CAS and cranking the car a few times. As you can see in the video there is some smoke coming from the turbo but I'm hoping that is just greasy fingerprints and residue burning off. I currently have the wastegate wired open just.to.make sure it runs good first.

If anyone has any tips for the first drive or anything else please chime in. I'm pumped to drive this thing!
Smoking manifold is 100% normal on first startup. Expect smoke to go away after 5-15 minutes. Keep the wastegate open for a bit while you drive some. Break in the clutch. Watch for leaks. Go back and recheck tightness on nuts and bolts after a few drives.

I also installed the ngk bkr7e spark plugs gapped at .030. From my searching that seems to be what everyone recommends for turbo on stock coils. Let me know if I'm wrong. The bkr6e's I had in it are only 1000 miles old but I didn't want to take any chances. I have let it warm up to operating Temps a couple times now and keep checking for leaks and looking for anything abnormal in megasquirt. So far no leaks and everything looks really good. When this rain stops I'll drive it around with the wastegate open to break in the clutch and then check torque on turbo and exhaust bolts.

Anything I am missing or be checking/looking for?

well I have a problem. I have the wastegate wired open and did a few WOT pulls and it shows me hitting 10.6 psi at 5996rpm. I ported the wastegate quite a bit as you can see previously in my thread. I didn't think it would be possible to go that high with the wastegate wired open.

P.s. the high heat paint sucks! I followed the directions to the T and its already flaking off

I didn't think paint would stay. Turbo gets too damn hot.

When I ported my MK turbo I ground the hole to be a 1/16'' from the edge of the flapper. I put paint on the flapper to show where it hit. I didn't do any internal grinding. I still get some boost, with the wastegate wired but I have a manual boost controller that handles it.

I would research the benefits of a turbo blanket. Mine burned crispy. Supposedly it also holds heat and cooks the oil, when you shut it off. I got a Flyin Miata heat shield to fit mine, with minimal modifications.

Removed the turbo and ported more.

Still have. 2.5psi boost with wastegate wired open. Cant port waste gate hole any bigger.

I removed turbo today and ported the wastegate as much as I could. I ported it almost to the edge of where the flapper is. Did a little bit of the channel too. Still getting 2.5psi boost with wastegate wired shut. I'm going to leave it as it is.

the bigger problem I have is the car idles like crap on hot starts. I've looked it.up and made.some.adjustments in megasquirt but its not helping.. AFRs go up.to 17s and the idle oscillates and will shut off unless i give it throttle. Runs good if I raised the idle VE, but then on cold starts my AFRs are really rich around 12.7.

Better than paint. Looks like this when done. Doesn't burn off because it isn't paint.

I'm following along closely, as I am working on installing the same kit on my '95. Loving the pictures, they are helpful. I've seen a couple pictures of folks installing the IAT sensor right after the intercooler (can't remember if this is where yours is) is that better than getting closer to the throttle body, or does it matter as long as its after the IC?

its better to have it closer to the IC because its less likely to get heatsoak. Let me know if you have anymore questions as you get further in your build.

Thanks, all helpful bits. Any advice on wiring, or pictures of vacuum line routing?
