Failed Smog - Please advise
Hi Guys,
Have not been around for ever, but I had a call from a friend that has failed his Smog here in CA, but only on the 15mph test.
Set up is stock Greddy, no IC, with Bipes. All else is stock kit.
The failure was for the NO (I think looking at the chart) PPM should be 847 Max and the reading was 1138. See attched file - Huh what happened to attachments?
%CO2 %02 HC (PPM) CO (%) NO (PPM)
Test RPM MEAS MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS RESULTS
15 MPH 1937 15.1 0.2 134 31 84 0.82 0.1 0.22 847 237 1138 FAIL
25 MPH 2273 1501 0.1 108 20 43 0.71 0.09 0.09 786 199 773 PASS
Does anyone have any ideas? I cannot think why it would only fail on this part of the test? At 15MPH for 1937 the turbo is not even working so must be something else.
Timing belt is new and timing checked as good. New air filter, good plugs.
Thanks,

i can't desipher your chart, but if everything passed except for a slightly high reading on CO at 15 mph, you should be ok.
what plugs are in the car? what are they gapped to?
good plug wires?
where's the timing?
i assume that the o2 sensor is good because everything else passed fine.
high CO indicates incomplete combustion.
most likely, you need to increase the plug gap to factory spec (.045 I think), and pull base timing back to 6° or so. The timing will be bad for performance, but will allow the mixture more time to burn.

I could not attach the chart, but yes everything is fine except the NO reading at 15mph of 1138 instead of 847 Max.
I will have the plugs checked for gap. I know the plug wires are good as they were installed last year NGK blue (and the car has been off the road for half a year). I was told the timing was ok, but have to check the degrees.
As far as the timing is concerned he has the Bipes so no need to retard back to 6 degrees. Bipes will pull timing when needed. Do you think the Bipes settings could be an issue?

How do the plugs look? Sooty? I had slightly higher NO readings and hte dude said it could be attributed to a minor oil burn issue. Which wouldn't surprise me considering I turboed the engine at 151k miles.
I had the same problem recently - what I did to pass the test.
1. replaced my 1.8 injectors with stock 1.6
2. lowered my timing down to 7degree
3. lower my fuel pressure regulator to less than stock
4. C0 was so low - passed the test.
5. revert changes.
I hope this help.

Ok forgot to mention, this is a 1.6 so injectors are stock. FPR is the Vortec so its fixed (per stock).
I'll have him check the plug look.

Protip: NEVER, EVER put "Please advise" in your ebay emails unless you want them to be ignored. In fact it's a good practice to delete "please advise" from your vocabulary altogether.
WTF is this ebay no he is a vetran member asking us for help not a random newb on faceless ebay. Come on dude.
speaking of passing, I just passed my car today and the numbers were so low I was amazed. However I a new cat and a rebuilt motor w/ mild porting at 5k miles with 180psi compression probably helps. I also gapped my plugs to .50 and of course went back to stock ecu and injectors.
I got less then the average on every single test and most tests I was about half of the average.
