Did they cut the manifold after welding?

Braineack 11-22-2012 12:08 PM

did they add the boost reference to the turbo off the compressor or is that how they come?

Savington 11-22-2012 12:19 PM

Is that nylon AN line attached with a hose clamp?

IMO getting the runners pointed into the turbo is much more important than attempting to get equal or semi-equal lengths.

Also, trying for smooth bends but expecting the gases to make a sharp turn to enter the turbine (see his #1 and #4) is dumb, it's better to go for sharper bends in order to avoid a final, very sharp turn into the turbine.

Lastly, #1 blowing into #4 isn't too bad, because when #1 exhaust valve is open, #4 is always closed. In contrast, when #1 starts to open, #2 is in overlap, the worst possible time for #2 to see a pulse of exhaust backpressure.

This layout looks good to me:

and this one. No attempts at equal length, but gas flow from each cylinder into the turbo is pretty smooth:

+1000000

The collector is the most important thing. Equal length is the LEAST important thing.

The stock NC manifold looks like a decent starting point for mounting a turbo.

Yeah, that was probably my question, post 215. :fawk:

FWIW, I think it's great mt'ers are contributing to the discussion. I find discussion on this forum is a bit over my head, so for the novice wrencher lke myself, m.net is great. That said, I have no doubt that constructive feedback from this crowd could improve the products being offered at m.net.

picture is broken but having seen your DIY manifold I'm sure you can build a better product out of a washing machine

Classy :jerkit:

Braineack 11-23-2012 11:53 AM

But honestly, if that's all it takes to sell stuff to NC owners, maybe we DO need to arrange something over there.

Start a list with names. Post little info. Shitty products and tell people to follow other manufacturers installation instructions. We'll be rich!

I'm just as shocked as you are about how excited everyone seems to be regarding this utter dog-shit being offered.

No one even questioned the obvious major flaws til wittyworks

A few years ago, when I was in high school, I acted the exact same way when my ebay 16g manifold/downpipe combo came in the mail.

It's simply a matter of not knowing enough about the subject.

I think what is in bold is the key issue. While yes there were a few cheap shots, a lot of the criticism we gave was very valid. I have nothing against TDRblackone making a NC turbo kit, I will actually encourage it because the more competition out there the better. It is just that the amount of development that has been done on Miata manifolds in the past few years has been tremendous and I want to to work with what has been discovered to work put into what is coming out for the NC's.

I mean how hard is it to have the welding done properly, correctly size Inconel studs so that you do not tack weld the turbo to the manifold, and remove the gasket between the two. I will give them possibly not having the best designed, because I do know the engine bay constraints in the NC.

Clos561 11-23-2012 01:34 PM

someone should fab up a joke manifold and we can start a thread here and cross link into that one.

Don't think I haven't considered it. I've got weld els in the garage, a flange, and I have the same level of welding skill. I sat here and thought "Hell, I could do that!"

I just don't want to ruin my flange... today.

Find some modeling clay which has about the same color as JB-weld.

You have an NC Flange? Is it stainless and 1/2 inch? I need to find one but I think I'm just going to end up making it.

Im going to build a setup for the RHD market, Be sure to be as hard on me, you cant improve without criticism.
