Theoritically, you can run as high of a boost pressure as you want until the engine begins detonating. Detonation is when the air and fuel mixture explodes spontaneously, either partially or wholly. When you hear the engine ping, that is a form of detonation, but not all detonation can be heard. For the greddy kit, the biggest limitation is fuel delivery and secondly, the timing (however do not discount the importance of getting the correct spark timing). I will try to explain very briefly these hurdles and expect you to search to find the rest of your answers.

Fueling: The greddy kit uses a rising rate fuel pressure system and the 1.6 injectors are completely maxxed out at around 180hp, therefore the need for bigger injectors. Once going to bigger injectors, the stock ecu is thrown out of balance and needs to be adjusted, hence people adjusting the AFM or replacing it with the RX7 unit. The best solution would be a standalone fuel computer that allows you to make fine adjustments and get your AFRs perfect.

As for timing, you have a few options with varying degrees of downfalls. The first is to simply retard your base timing to whatever is needed. Second would be to hook up a timing retard device such as MSD or Bipes. And the best solution would be a standalone timing controller.

I hope this helps a little bit, and I know it may seem like gibberish until you have a good understanding of how engine management systems work, but when you do it will make sense

Make sure you are ok with spending lots of money and time. If it's not one thing it's another.

and know that every "upgrade" you do will cause another item to fail or require upgrading. It never ends.

I'm in the last stages now. Only things left are Walbro and a clutch. Then I can go to 10-15psi and start breaking **** I upgraded already. Make sure you REALLY like your Miata before you get into it.

Any post that calls itself stupid, can probably find the answers using the FAQ or search function.

I would do alot of reading, its not quite a simple MBC adjustment away.

apparently it is, judging from the number of blown motors around here.

its a domino effect. start out with a simple kit, get bit buy the power bug, then start the Apocalypse. Ok, an intercooler will be enough, oh, i need the IC pipes. wait, how come my boost is not going up with the IC set up? oh, i need a boost controller. cool, u got ur boost controller, but how do u know what boost u are at or will be at? oh, thats right, need a boost gauge. now u are set, got a boost gauge, BC, IC, now u can set it to what u want......damn! whats that marble rolling in ur engine? oh, it might be......dettt...naaaaation??? i need to get a timing retard unit.....ahhhhh! thanks bipes, u saved the day, what? not enough fuel? ok, ok, injectors, kool, whatcha mean fuel pump not sufficiant? i'll show u with a hi-flo fuel pump, WHAT?!?!? u mean the fuel pressure regulator is not gonna help??? need a what??? ok fine! i will get an adjustable one then! yeeeehaaaaa! WAIT! sounds like a turbo surge! Damn it! need to relieve the pressure with a BOV. ok, that makes a cools sound, but the car needs more air and to put out more air, damn it, a down pipe, and back system! ahhhRRRRRR!!!!! and the LIST GOES ON FOREVER & EVER & NEVER ENDS!

anyways, ur getting the picture, domino effect! hope u got a good credit score cuz u will need a loan to fund this project! & YES, SOMETHING AND EVERYTHING WILL GO WRONG! once u change the physics of the car, everything, will be affected! Good Luck & may the Good Lord be with You!

We only blow our motors to justify motor swaps or builds. It gets boring having the same motor. Its called.. "I wish I had a rotary". Changing engines like underwear.
