That's great until he comes into a FS of yours and takes a big dump, and you won't even know about it.

Good point. To the OP, sorry for the thread jack.

I think the Bell kit and some rods would be the way to go.

From what I have discussed with many people about the NC the problem with the NC motor is not that it is weak, its that you cant replace the ECU and the stock ECU has many different variables including as many as five fuel maps so chipping it is a no no unless you can figure out what it is really doing.

BEGI uses the Xede on the NC and as much as I hate the Xede it is currently the best system for the NC and BEGI has proven it on its NC kits.

Unfortunately due to all the blown motors from the sniper mods the NC motor has gotten a bad wrap I dont think it deserves.

TurboTim 01-04-2010 07:30 PM

There is a BEGI dealer in central NJ that also may be able to help on the install or fabrication of anything you may need, exhaust, etc. A lot of the miata mob people use them for BEGI parts.

MODESTflow is a good shop too, if you don't mind gays.

The ECU variable does not matter on the NC and Xede. The Xede will work with any version ECU, unlike the Sniper. You don't need to replace the ECU at this point. We are not maxing out the MAF yet. Once that occurs, then, yes, a standalone ECU would be beneficial. I am sure there are people working on it, but it is not done yet.

Quite simply, the Xede is an easy to tune solution for a forced induction street car, especially when you have to pass OBD II inspection and are too lazy to uninstall everything. So.. does it have it's quirks, yes. Nothing that is not tolerable, in my book. And I have very high standards.

I completely agree. Sniper's failures were not from a bad car or bad motor. Not even related to Cosworth parts. Blame can be laid at Sniper's feet. Plenty of people have made loads of power on these motors. They are a Ford Duratec Motor, btw. At 300 whp, a year later, other than a clutches, nothing is going bad. Almost at the one year point now - no broken trannys, no bent rods, no failed pistons, no larger radiator needed. On 5 or 6 cars. All of which are running more power than a Cosworth ever saw.

Don't let anyone scare you into not modifying this car. I am not a big fan of the '06 body style. But I tell ya, I'd live with it, for that power and driveability. It is awesome, fast, smooth, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive.
Stephanie

p.s. if you plan to go turbo, ditch the roadster exhaust. The turbo will work with it, but most people will replace it.

hustler 01-06-2010 05:04 PM

Actually, the 5-speed in the NC is a raging piece of shit. The MX-5 guys burn through the 5-speeds and I know a of a guy who Johnwag deals with freqeuntly (thanks for the spare 6-speed, honey) who has quite a few to rebuild.

just like he NA and NB, the 5-speed is trash and the 6-speed is glory.

triple88a 01-06-2010 05:56 PM

Steph, Is it possible to get rid of the darn maf and replace it with a map sensor? I believe that is the main limitation to xede. Otherwise it sure is a great piggyback.

Stephanie Turner 01-12-2010 04:52 PM

Sure, we can build the parts. But what are you going to use it with? The Xede has to have the MAF. Sniper has to have the MAF. We did play with making the Xede run a speed density system, but never finished it. It would not be OBD II compatible.

there is no way to make it measure map and convert the output to the stock ecu to an appropriate maf voltage or even use both?

Just trying to save people some headache, i've had some bad experience when trying to tune my xede unit and going into the 16s when the turbo sharply spools up and the maf lagging a bit. I hope its my head gasket and nothing more lol.

I'm thinking by adding a map, the xede can reads pressure instead of load on the left and rpm on the bottom. That would be the best tuning solution IMO.

Sure. I wrote a comprehensive tutorial on this a few years ago: AFM Removal from the 1.6 liter Miata using eManage Ultimate

But why would you want to?

ajbalmat 01-13-2010 02:23 AM

this thread went from dumb, to pointlessly stupid, to ecu talk from a tuner's perspective...wtf?

TurboTim 01-13-2010 08:40 AM

That's how we roll here.

So how about that Avatar movie. I haven't seen it yet, is it worth it?

On an NB or NC, and use the Xede? No. Not yet at any rate. We played with setting up the speed density system. But we'd still have to send a "fake" MAF signal to the ECU in order for it to be happy.

That had nothing to do with the MAF lagging, that was the stock injectors. The Xede will only work so-so on stock injectors. It works best with larger injectors. The Xede cannot directly change injector pulse width. It makes an indirect change, and it is not quite good enough. If it were 4-5 psi and timing was under control, not a big deal. The car does not stay closed loop, for a long enough period of time, much less generate enough heat, to do any real damage.

It would not add a map, well not unless we used it to send the car open loop instead of the O2 sensor. It would simply change the reference for which the engine load calculation was made. The input variable would change.
