white smoke...

white smoke...
ok so i recently did my clutch and flywheel. replaced rear main oil seal and the front and rear tranny seals.
left it at a friends shop and they finished up the work and i picked the car up in the morning. mechanic said my oil wasn't good...so he changed it. i knew i was previously burning oil at maybe 1qt/500 miles. so i would check it and fill appropiately. i don't know what kind of oil he replaced it with but i was using mobil 1 10-30.
when i got the car back it drove fine for awhile. then the next day ny friend was following me and noticed white smoke on downshifts. then i noticed ALOT of white smoke while i was idling at a light.
the smoke is fairly white and doesn't evaporate right away. it sticks around alot.
while im driving no smoke, but as soon as i downshift and stop at a light it spews white smoke again.
i changed the headgasket about 4k miles ago, i don't know the milage on the engine, but the odometer reads 206k right now.
what do you guys think the problem is ? some ppl over on m.net were talking about changing between different oils and having problems adapting ?
any input is greatly appreciated....

oil drain is to the left side of the block on the greddy return. i recently installed a oil catch can.... i think this might b screwing with it. the catch can is connected to the pcv valve and the breather outlet on the right side of the valve cover.
the turbo is a 16g greddy, i have the feed line put into the stock input...
could the turbo be going out and need a rebuild ?

I'd also check around the car very carefully for any very small oil leaks, particularly around the oil drain area. I had white smoke only with hard acceleration and found a small leak from the oil return line would splash back and hit the exhaust and create smoke only with acceleration. Granted, it is different than your situation, but something to checkout.

just went outside to mess with the car... i think i figured it out.
i installed a catch can the other day right.... it was some generic one. 250mL 2 outlets. 9mm hoses... not vented or anything on top just two hoses coming out of it.
i connected one to the right side of the valve cover and one to the pcv valve. then i put a vaccum nipple on the throttle body outlet.
so basically there was no way for the valve cover pressure to be released right... and the stuff that normally blew into the throttle body to get burned off in the engine later was being totally recirculating maybe even pressurizing the valve cover.....
im gunna go take the car out for a hard run... ill let you guys know what i find.

take a pic. that doesn't sound right.
a catch can on a system that doesn't even use a breather line really aint going to do much. if anything you are robbing the crankcase of any vacuum and your oil drain line is suffering and backing oil up into the turbo.
a properly plumbed PCV system will allow vacuum to be sucked out of the crackcase. the turbo drain line is affect, as it is at the bottom of the crankcase. removing vacuum from the drain line means more gravity/effort is required to drain oil from the turbo. and since you have about 5' of return you are suffering from plumbing the breather line improperly (or at all), and again so by attaching the same line to the pcv.
You want to install the thing between the breather line and the intake. So as you pull air out of the crankcase it catches any oil that may go itno the intake. Put the PCV back to OEM plumbing (verify functioning). I bet your smoke goes away.

i just got back from driving the car around. i definitely thing it was the way i plumbed the catch can. as soon as i returned the pcv to the original plumbing it stopped smoking.
i think you were right scott, with the pressure built up on the crankcase my oil return for the turbo was having one hell of a time getting rid of all the oil. thanks again and i hope others can benefit from my errors and learn from them because i sure am
