I have a NB rack and a NB subframe I can sell him :dealwithit:

This is curly we are talking about, he's still running a FAIL.6 and MS1. What makes you think he'll want your fancy subframes and steering racks? https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...3aAMryfmExxLSJ

I'm sure they weigh too much, like everything else on a NBarge.

Here's a question though: Does anyone know what the actual diametral gap is between the two parts of the pinion shaft? I'm trying to decide whether or not to use the activator. It is recommended if you are near the gap limits for the retaining compound, but indicates that the ultimate strength of the cure will be slightly lower than if cured without activator at closer tolerances.

bringing this back from the dead a bit. Did you ever try the loctite 680 for this? if so, results? how long did it last? what application?

jnshk 03-09-2014 04:45 PM

I did try it and the rack is reassembled, but I still haven't gotten around to swapping it back into the car, so I haven't yet had opportunity to test the effectiveness/longevity of it.

Application is the original JKC power rack out of my 1997 NA.

by application, I mean what do you do with the car? autocross? street driven? back roads? de events? etc.

jnshk 03-10-2014 07:55 AM

I see. Once installed it will primarily just see street driven duty.

clif notes

"I soaked mine in degreaser then soaked it in isopropyl alcohol, blasted with air nozzle to get rid of any residue.
I have my welder proceed in alternating segments like torquing a lug. Done in one continuous weld can warp it. Ask me how I know that

Not the kind of thing you give to any one but an absolute expert welder with the correct equipment for the job."

For those of you concerned with the potential for catastrophic steering failure with welded input shafts, I'd suggest reviewing the incidents that have occurred. Only there haven't been any with several hundred Miatas with probably an accumulated 5000+hrs of abuse with race tires.

One of the pinions my welder did back in 2008. We still do it the same way
