Default Cant go higher then 175chp

Hello, i race in a local time attack series with not very limited rules. Pretty much my only rules i have to stay within is 200tw tires (225 rival s 1.5) and then staying in 12:1 hp to lb. I had my car weighed with a full tank it was 2120 this tells me i can pretty much get 175 at the crank. The race sanction takes your wheel hp and adds 15% if your 2 wheel drive so thats about 150 to the wheels. The motor i have in the car is a automatic 1.6, i say auto motor because supposedly they have a smaller intake cam and lower compression. Im looking to focus on power this off season with that being said 1.8 swap/supercharger/turbo give me advice. I know with 1.8 i will still be pretty low on power. The supercharger would put me right their but im just not a fan of them. I would love to do a low boost turbo build but kinda scared of making too much power

you can drop in a vvt long block with bolt ons and achieve 150hp without even needing boost.
that's a very modest power goal and super easy to reach.

Sounds like you're running the PPIR series. I'd recommend an MKTurbo kit and then just turn the boost down to 5-7psi for competition and enjoy 10+ on the street. I was driving the black Miata in RA with an MKTurbo kit last weekend, the turbo response is excellent.

Ha small world yea i run in rb at the ppir tad and i want to stay in rb for next year. Im leaning towards a turbo with real low boot because their is room to grow so when im ready for the class switch i already have it figured out.

VVT Swap with bolt-ons should get you right there with no issues.

The NA route makes a lot of sense, but if youre feeling adventurous you could take advantage of the rules by building a turbo setup that makes lots of torque and stays under the max power. The trick would be to use a restrictor with a small turbo. Run "all of it" at low-mid RPM and let the restrictor choke it down at higher RPM. With a responsive turbo you could get something like this dyno.

you can do this with electronic boost control provided your wastegate allows for you to waste all of the exhaust up top. then a switch of a map/switch and you change back to all of the boosts.

This tiny turbo, high rpm, boost bleeding theory sounds way overly complicated, over expensive, less reliable, and not very much fun to drive, all for very little gain. N/A VVT makes plenty of tq down low, not that you're driving at 3000rpms on a track anyway. I'm as big of a turbo fanboy as anyone, but at that power level it just makes no sense to me.

this kinda whats goin through my head i have a t2556 layin around from my fwd sr days but it might be too big or find a 3-5 psi wastegate might be a pain it does help its a auto 1.6 motor but still cost, reliability, better power band, more future potental and vtak im pretty sure im goin 1.8vvt swap with ms3 this off season. then turbo the vvt the off season after when i ready to switch classes

you don't need to run a small turbo, just make sure your wastegate is big enough to allow you to waste the boost.

I agree with everyone suggesting a VVT with bolt ons. A turbo for that little of a power boost is not worth the cost/weight of the entire system. Think about it, you'll need to add the weight of a turbo, all of its necessary lines, intercooler, and charge piping.

it would be fun to try but the effort to gains doesnt make sense it would be cool kinda a proper turbo set up making very little power 🤣.
But im trying to win races not win a science fair, im on the lookout for a vvt motor now.
